Delight-directed learning involves helping your children follow whatever pursuits come naturally to them. In cases where your children are hoping to attend a health care camp, or perhaps jump into a new orchestra performance, that is delight-directed learning, which comes about naturally. Usually this is most noticeable in athletics. Our family did summer swim team. Other families may really dive into music and art.

Certain children will do nothing but read books. I had a son who regularly had a book in front of him. Many children will do volunteer work; they are really into becoming a candy striper at a hospital, and summer might be their sole occasion to achieve that. Others really enjoy working with kids, so they move from vacation bible school to vacation bible school helping out with various churches. Other children can do nearly all their projects such as scouting or 4H.

The best way you might strongly encourage delight-directed learning is to use summer as a gift-giving opportunity.

You can provide your kids certain gifts that will inspire their passions. For my son, this required getting Teaching Company classes on economics or American government. The unusually warm weather in the United States boosted job creation temporarily by allowing things like more construction activity.

Though the average temperature for the world as a whole was actually slightly lower than the historical average, it was warmer than usual in the northern part of the United States.

It could be added that by lowering electricity use and therefore prices it held down price inflation and boosted real wages. MIAMI (AP) ? No fourth-quarter collapse this time against Dallas. These days, everything seems to be going right at home for the Miami Heat.

LeBron James and Chris Bosh each finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem scored 16 apiece and the Heat extended the league's longest home winning streak this season to 15 games with a 106-85 win over the Mavericks in an NBA finals rematch on Thursday night.

Mario Chalmers scored 12 points and Norris Cole added 10 for Miami, which swept its two games with Dallas this season and snapped a two-game losing streak.

"We just worked our habits," James said. "The best thing about tonight, we didn't take another step backwards like we did the last two games. And it was good to see."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 for Dallas, but was held to 1-for-9 shooting in the second half. Lamar Odom had 12 for the Mavericks, who were outrebounded 44-29 and were held to only two fast-break points.

Miami outscored Dallas 26-13 in the fourth quarter to cap the win.

"You have to give them credit," Nowitzki said. "They stepped up their pressure on both ends of the floor. In the first half everything came a little too easy for us. We got some good looks, got some rolls, had everything going. Then they really picked up their pressure and we didn't have many good looks."

It was Dallas' first time playing at Miami since winning Game 6 of the NBA finals last June, a series that turned after an epic late Game 2 comeback by the Mavs in Miami and eventually became the ultimate payback ? hoisting a championship trophy in Miami, five years after Wade and the Heat celebrated winning their title in Dallas.

Still, Dallas insisted this trip wasn't about revisiting memories.

"Just another day at the office," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said.

Well, not an altogether friendly day at the office ? particularly late.

In the fourth quarter alone, Nowitzki had the bridge of his nose bloodied, James got hit in the mouth and Wade spent a few minutes grabbing at his right index finger in obvious discomfort. Adding to Miami's discomfort: Dallas being within 90-83 with 4:37 left after Nowitzki made four free throws in a 27-second span.

Any angst existing at that point dissipated quickly.

"I felt like we were in control," Wade said. "They got a couple things to go their way. It was just about settling down and running offense."

Simple as that. A 9-0 run sealed it for Miami, with Wade quarterbacking the charge.

His two-handed dunk pushed the Heat lead back to double figures, then he found Bosh to set up a three-point play and set up James for a slam that pushed the lead to 99-83 with 3:03 left. The Mavs called time out, took Nowitzki and three others off the floor for the night, and the Heat slide was soon over.

Vince Carter and Brandan Wright each scored 11 for Dallas.

"It's tough," Carter said of facing the Heat. "When they're rolling, they're rolling."

Miami's offense has sputtered for nearly a month, but the Heat scored 60 points by halftime for the first time in 11 games. James, Bosh and Wade shot 12 for 21 by halftime, and Miami's bench ? Haslem and Cole, mostly ? connected on 10 of 13 shots before intermission. Haslem made all four of his shots in the half and Cole was 4 for 6 after making four shots in his last seven games.

Even with all that, the lead was only 60-53 at the break, in large part because Nowitzki was 8 for 10 from the field.

Miami's offense cooled big-time in the third, the Heat shooting an abysmal 5 for 23. And the lead actually grew by a point in the period, thanks to what went on at the other end.

An 11-2 run gave the Heat their first double-digit lead, after holding Dallas without a field goal for more than 6 minutes. Miami led by as many as 13 in the third, before Odom scored Dallas' final seven points of the period to get the Mavs within 80-72 going into the final quarter.

"It was disappointing," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "Our start to the third quarter was strong and then they answered back."

And now, Miami hits the road for games in Toronto on Friday and Boston on Sunday. The Heat have lost six of their last eight away from home.

"It's time for a response on the road," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We will take this win. This is a great team win against a very good team. But we have to move on and now let's take care of business on the road."

Mavs guard Delonte West (broken right ring finger) played for the first time in 22 games. Center Brendan Haywood (sprained right knee) was active, but indicated he was more likely to return at Orlando on Friday. ... It marked the third time in Heat history that the team swept a season series with a reigning NBA champion.

How Much More Women Pay for Health Insurance

I agree with you that it?s unfair for men to have to pay more for auto insurance too, but the two situations are a little different, IMO. Men are more likely to be involved in auto accidents, and hence the higher insurance rates. Women are more likely to use health care services, in large part due to maternity care needs and screening for cancer, etc, which is why their health insurance rates are higher. To me, there?s a huge difference in volition or inevitability between the two.

Obama heads to SKorea for nonproliferation summit

ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. (AP) ? President Barack Obama has departed for Seoul, South Korea, for an international summit on keeping nuclear materials out of the hands of terrorists.

More than 50 world leaders are expected to attend the gathering on Monday and Tuesday.

Obama's visit comes amid new tension with the North over a planned long-range rocket launch. The U.S. has said the plan jeopardizes a deal to provide American food aid.

Obama's first stop on Sunday morning will be at the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea. His visit is likely to be read by the North as a special show of strength to its new, untested leader.

Air Force One took off from Andrews Air Force Base after midnight.

Tebow's presence gives Jets' offense options

NEW YORK (AP) ? Each time Tim Tebow steps on the field for the New York Jets, defenses will know what to expect.

Well, the unexpected, of course.

The versatile and elusive quarterback with the flair for dramatic victories was acquired Wednesday from the Denver Broncos and will give the Jets' offense a boost ? for at least a few snaps a game.

"Instead of a team just preparing for our base offense, they will have to prepare for what we do and what we may do," coach Rex Ryan said at LSU's pro day Thursday in Baton Rouge, La.

Tebow, who arrived at the Jets' facility in Florham Park, N.J., for the first time Thursday afternoon, won't start as he did in Denver, not with New York committed to Mark Sanchez. But Tebow gives the Jets the option to run offensive coordinator Tony Sparano's wildcat offense ? the one that confused teams while in Miami with the Dolphins ? and provides an intriguing presence when games are on the line.

"Tim is an outstanding football player, and we can use him," Ryan said. "He'll fit our wildcat package. As a defensive coach, I know how hard it is to defend the wildcat. We can take it to another level with Tim. We will have things for Tebow each week."

Consider that fair warning.

"What we've seen from him, you've got to watch every time he's in there," Jets defensive end Mike DeVito said. "He has the ability to throw the ball and a great ability to run the ball, so any role we put him in, it'll keep defenses on their toes."

DeVito and the rest of the Jets know that from experience. Tebow led a 95-yard winning touchdown drive against New York last November, scoring on a 20-yard scramble with less than a minute remaining. That set off a string of stirring comebacks as the Broncos rode Tebow's incredible late-game play ? despite his ugly mechanics and passing stats ? all the way to the playoffs, including an overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the opening round.

Long before all that, Tebow already had developed a faithful following that overlooked his flaws and focused on his leadership and ability to come through in the clutch. He's bringing those same qualities to New York, but he'll be in a different role.

"They want me to come in and compete and get better, and get better as a quarterback and to help the team any way possible," Tebow said Wednesday night. "Whatever that role is, I will do my best every time I step on that field and give my heart and soul."

Sanchez will get the snaps as the starting quarterback, and Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum have told anyone who'll listen that he is their unquestioned No. 1 guy under center.

"Mark is a great competitor," Ryan said. "He's our starting quarterback. We're incredibly fortunate to have two young quarterbacks with playoff experience and playoff wins. Mark has taken us to two AFC championship games in three years. That speaks volumes about him. He is just hitting his stride."

But Sanchez also is coming off a shaky season in which he had as many touchdown passes as turnovers: 26. His decision-making and leadership came under fire by fans, media and even some anonymous players in the offseason. After a quick flirtation with the idea of chasing Peyton Manning, the Jets issued a huge vote of confidence to Sanchez by giving him a three-year contract extension.

But less than two weeks later, New York traded for Tebow ? a player with a rock-star persona and an impressive resume smattered with comeback wins. Just how secure Sanchez's job is remains to be seen once he throws his first interception or has a bad drive. But what the Jets envision is Sanchez leading the offense and Tebow running the wildcat formation when they need a spark.

"If our offense is sputtering, and we have, say, three three-and-outs, and we roll this out there and it's successful, who knows?" Tannenbaum said on 1050 ESPN Radio on Thursday. "I think it will just depend on the game and the situation."

Third-and-long? Put Tebow in to make defenses dare him to throw.

Fourth-and-goal? Try to tackle the guy, who's built more like a fullback at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds.

Oh, he's in the wildcat, which Sparano so adores? Well, defenses need to decide if he's going to take off running, hand it off or catch defensive backs napping with a toss over their heads.

"We think we can have explosive plays out of that package as well," Tannenbaum said.

So, it could be five snaps a game. Or, seven. Maybe even nine or 10. One thing's for sure: Tebow gives the Jets their first true multipurpose threat since Brad Smith, who left as a free agent last offseason.

"Excited about the tebow trade," wide receiver Jeremy Kerley wrote on Twitter. "It's obvious tht he's a winner and thts Wht we need!"

For a team that was done in last season by distractions and disharmony, Tebow's addition would appear to do little more than add to an already volatile situation. There are times Sanchez will have to come off the field when Tebow jogs onto it, something that won't please the ultra-competitive quarterback heading into his fourth season. Ryan, though, insists Tebow and Sanchez can co-exist ? and win together.

"Tim gives us another competitor," Ryan said. "I love Tim's competitiveness. He'll fit in with our team. There will be no problem at all. We care about our team first and foremost. Those two guys are just like that."

The Jets currently have four quarterbacks on their roster ? Sanchez, Tebow, recently signed Drew Stanton and Greg McElroy. Stanton signed with New York to be the No. 2 but wants out now that Tebow is here. Tannenbaum made it clear that Tebow will be Sanchez's backup, serving in the role veteran Mark Brunell held the last two seasons.

"Brunell was more like a coach, and now Mark's going to have like a brother in there, someone he can lean on and someone he can grow with ? and they can grow together at the position," DeVito said. "So, I think Mark is going to be excited."

The possibilities certainly make the Jets excited. After all, Ryan is determined to go back to the run-first, "Ground-and-Pound" approach that made them so successful in his first two seasons as coach. With Tebow on board, the Jets just might have gotten the perfect addition for Ryan's master plan.

"What we've become," Tannenbaum said while announcing the deal Wednesday night, "is a diverse, more dynamic offense that's going to make it more difficult for opposing teams to defend."

Does your family game night need a boost? Join engineers from the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab for hands-on workshops about game design. Visitors of all ages can choose from four different sessions that will change the way you look at board games, video games, and more. Featuring Board Game Remix (middle school and older), Junkyard Track Meet (youth and family), Serious Games for Social Change (teen and adult), and Unity Basics (teen and adult, programming experience required).

The Junkyard Track Meet: Tabletop Game Design for the Whole Family
Ages: Youth and family

In this workshop, participants will create and practice their own competitive sports and then compete in the sports created by others. But there isn't a need to train, as all the sports will be played on tabletops! This is a great workshop for families to attend together, as they can work together in both creation and play.

In the first part of the workshop, participants will visit The Junkyard to select items to use in the creation of their sporting event. They will practice the event and prepare a short presentation.

In the second part, each group will present and demonstrate their event to the others. Then, members from other groups will be able to compete in the event.

Finally, we will talk about the game design process. Participants will come away having learned about game design and play and may take home some new tabletop activities!

This workshop is facilitated by Dr. Scott Nicholson, visiting professor for the Comparative Media Studies program and visiting scholar at the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT game lab at MIT. Once upon a time games were played for enjoyment and to engage players in social, physical and cultural activities. But in the last years a new trend of serious games with "serious purposes" arose. These games claim to raise awareness about social and political issues such as inequity, injustice, poverty, racism, sexism, exploitation, oppression, teach about global problems, and reach specific purposes beyond pure entertainment (make donations, raise funds, sign petitions, form opinion and so on). Some of these games even aim at changing the world. In this workshop, best practice examples of serious games for social change will be played, discussed and analyzed. Furthermore ideas and sketches for proto-types will be developed and ways of realizing them will be discussed! The workshop gives the participants hands-on experiences and insights into the potential and limits of video games designed for social change. No pre-experiences are needed!

to install Unity ahead of time; a free version is available at

Parents of slain Florida teen to join Million Hoodies March

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The father of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teen shot dead by a neighborhood watch captain in Florida, said on Wednesday he would join A Million Hoodies March in New York to demand justice for his slain son who "didn't deserve to die this evil way."

Tracy Martin said he and Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, would join the crowd but would not wear hooded sweatshirts like the one their 17-year-old son wore when he was killed last month in a gated community in Sanford, Florida, by watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

That is because they did not pack any for their trip to speak with talk show hosts about the shooting, Tracy Martin said.

The incident has drawn national attention and sparked debate over Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law since Zimmerman, 28, has claimed self-defense in the fatal shooting. The police have declined to arrest him.

"I think it is great that the people in New York have passion and that the people of New York are tired of people being stereotyped," Tracy Martin told Reuters.

"I'm just in awe that they are standing behind this cause 100 percent," said Martin, whose girlfriend's home is in the gated community where his son died after a trip to the store for candy.

Organizer Daniel Maree said the rally in Union Square Park, north of Greenwich Village, was intended to "put pressure on whoever it takes to charge George Zimmerman and prosecute him."

"Everyone who attends this rally is conscious of an epidemic in our society of young African-American people being targeted in our society," Maree said.

On February 26, Trayvon Martin was walking back to the gated community in Sanford when he was seen by Zimmerman. Zimmerman called Sanford Police to report a suspicious person in the neighborhood and then, while armed with a handgun, followed the teen despite the police dispatcher telling him not to.

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and the FBI said on Monday that they had opened an investigation into the shooting. A state grand jury was also being convened.

Police have turned the case over to prosecutors, citing Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, enacted in 2006 and now in effect in about 20 other states. The law provides a shooter with wide latitude to claim a killing was in self-defense.

More than 818,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org, a social action website, calling for Zimmerman's arrest.

In the hours before the rally, Tracy Martin recalled one of the last conversations he had with his son, a discussion about love.

"I told him just think about the letters that are in the word love," recalled Martin. "I told him L stands for love. O stands for over. The V stands for violence, and the E stands for evil. And I just said love over violence and evil. My son was a good kid and he didn't deserve to die this evil way."
