Fed's Dudley eyeing U.S. jobs, Europe

Reuters | June 29, 2012 | 09:03 AM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An influential Federal Reserve official said he modestly lowered his expectations for inflation in coming months, but added more clarity on the U.S. jobs market and the European crisis was need to take a firmer stance on the health of the U.S. economy.

New York Fed President William Dudley, a close ally of Chairman Ben Bernanke, said on Friday U.S. employment growth has "slowed considerably of late" as the economy has lost momentum.

"Although some of the current uncertainties will take time to resolve, I can imagine material data on a number of dimensions could become available in the coming weeks and months that could lead me to adjust my forecast further," Dudley said in prepared remarks he was to deliver to the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce via video link.

"I will be paying particularly close attention to whether domestic momentum and hiring picks up now that the pay-back for the mild winter is over, and whether financial conditions, which are heavily influenced at present by developments in Europe, ease or tighten further."

Three consecutive months of soft U.S. jobs growth and the simmering euro zone debt crisis led the U.S. central bank last week to ramp up its monetary stimulus to the stalled economic recovery.

Breeding Miscue Robbed Taste from Supermarket Tomatoes

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Supermarket tomatoes were bred to all turn light green at the same time, but what came along for that ride was a reduction in the ability to produce sugar. Cynthia Graber reports

More 60-Second Science

How does a Venus flytrap know when to snap shut? Can it actually feel an insect?s tiny, spindly legs? And how do cherry blossoms know when to bloom? Can they...

For many people summer equals tomatoes. That?s when folks can get their hands on gorgeous heirloom and traditional varieties, full of tomatoey flavor. Such tomatoes provide a stark contrast to year-round supermarket ones, famous for tasting like, well, nothing. They?ve been bred for uniform color and ripening?not for taste.

Now scientists have determined just what?s genetically missing in store-bought tomatoes.

The researchers honed in on two transcription factors. Transcription factors are proteins that control the expression of genes?in this case they?re necessary for the production of chloroplasts, which allow sunlight to generate sugars and other compounds.

Darker green tomato fruit expresses genes that make possible increased photosynthesis?and so the fruits are able to produce more sugars for a tastier end product. But typical supermarket tomatoes, which had been bred to all turn light green at the same time, were also accidentally bred with reduced chloroplasts?and thus reduced sugar content. The research was published in the journal Science. [Ann L.T. Powell et al., "Uniform ripening Encodes a Golden 2-like Transcription Factor Regulating Tomato Fruit Chloroplast Development"]

The scientists say understanding the genes involved in better flavor could enable growers to offer tastier supermarket varieties. So that when you say tomato, I can say to-ma-to or to-mah-to instead of bleech.

Chocolate and Blonde Macaroons ~ Raw Vegan Recipe - Yes

?24 pieces ~ $.58 each

ingredients
  • 1 cup almonds ($2.00)
  • 1 cups brazil nuts ($2.32)
  • 20 dates ($8.00)
  • 1 cup finely shredded coconut ($1.20)
  • 2 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder ($.30)
  • 1 tsp vanilla ($.20)

I have yet to come up with or run across a raw food recipe that's not fast and easy. These are no exception.

In a food processor with an S blade, process all ingredients, except the cocoa powder, until finely chopped and it all starts to clump together. This takes a minute or two.

Using a plastic rounded tablespoon or melon scooper, scoop out and press to make a half sphere. Use half the mixture to make regular coconut macaroons. Add the cocoa or cacao powder to the remaining mixture and process until well incorporated and then shape with the tablespoon or scooper.

New prostate cancer drugs promising

DENVER, June 24 (UPI) -- New classes of drugs that target androgens such as testosterone, which prostate cancer cells require to grow, are showing promise, U.S. researchers say.

Dr. E. David Crawford of the University of Colorado Cancer Center said the production of androgens like testosterone depends on an intact system in which the brain recognizes hormone levels, signals the pituitary to increase or decrease production, and the pituitary in turn sets the testes in motion.

"By targeting the production of androgens by the testes, we could break that system at many other points," Crawford said in a statement. "For example, estrogen is similar enough to testosterone that administering estrogen to patients tricked the brain into thinking testosterone hormone levels were high -- with high presumed hormone levels, the brain sent no production signal to the pituitary. But estrogen therapy led to side effects including breast enlargement."

Another class of drugs -- luteinizing hormone releasing hormones -- intervened in this signaling chain at the level of the pituitary in a similar way to estrogen, but for those with bone metastasis in the back, spinal complications could occur, Crawford said.

However, androgen antagonists like the drug Enzalutamide -- currently in phase III clinical trials -- target cells' ability to trap testosterone that exists in the body, Crawford said.

"With this approach, it doesn't matter how much testosterone is floating around, as long as prostate cancer cells are unable to grab it," Crawford said.

The review was published in the British Journal of Urology International.

GOP lawmakers targeted for gay marriage support

David Handschuh / Pool / Getty Images file

Couple Ray Durand (L) and his partner Dale Shields kiss while having their picture taken after their wedding ceremony at the Manhattan City Clerk's office on the first day that New York State's Marriage Equality Act went into effect on July 24, 2011 in New York City.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

One year after New York lawmakers voted to make same-sex marriage legal in the state, opponents of gay marriage are pledging to unseat the Republicans whose support was key to the law's passage, saying they want to send a message to other legislators that there are ?consequences? to their votes.

The National Organization for Marriage, which opposes gay marriage,?says it is funneling $2 million into the state?to oust three state senators who voted to support the legislation. All three, Sens. Roy McDonald, Stephen Saland and Mark Grisanti,?are facing primary challenges. A fourth GOP senator, Jim Alesi, already has said he won?t seek a ninth term due to local opposition over his pro-gay marriage stance.

Alesi, 64, and his three fellow GOP senators joined 29 Democrats on June 24, 2011, to give the bill a 33-29 victory. Though Alesi told msnbc.com he was sad to leave office, he said the vote on gay marriage was "irrevocable" and decried the actions of NOM as "purely revenge" and "blind hatred."

"The focal point of running against good candidates (his three fellow GOP senators) ... is nothing more than a bag of rocks that they?re carrying around and they?ll have to carry them for a long, long time because marriage isn?t going anywhere, it?s here,? he said.

Brian Brown, executive director of NOM, doesn't shy away from the fact his group is hoping to intimidate wavering lawmakers into opposing gay marriage.

?The message is clear, that supporting same-sex marriage is a losing issue, not a winning issue,? Brown told msnbc.com. ?You could lose your career over supporting same-sex marriage.?

He also doesn't buy the argument that gay marriage is a settled issue in New York,?even though a?May 2012 poll by Quinnipac University found the state's voters support same-sex marriage 54 to 37 percent.

"If we don?t get a vote this year, we?re going to work to get one next year. We?re not going away," Brown said. "I think it?s just wishful thinking to say that once you have same-sex marriage the fight?s over. It?s not."

Toward that end, NOM has spent $400,000 on issue ads, billboards, automated calls and direct mail as well as made direct donations through its New York PAC. It is planning to spend another $1.6 million to try to unseat McDonald, Saland and Grisanti as a result of their gay marriage votes.

Both McDonald and Saland?face opponents strongly opposed to gay marriage, and their contests could turn on the issue. Grisanti?also has faced criticism for his marriage vote, but his Republican opponent, Kevin Stocker,?won't say where he stands on the issue. Instead,?Stocker argues?the issue should have been put before voters, not enacted by the legislature, according to capitoltonight.com's "State of Politics" blog.

?NOM is trying to use the choke point of a Republican primary to punish people who voted ? the other way,? said Bruce Gyory, a political consultant in New York who supports gay marriage but did not work on the issue for either side. ?NOM?s strategy is to try to take advantage of the more conservative factor ?? that exists in Republican primaries and use that as an example to say to legislators in other states, ?Don?t you dare vote for this because you?ll lose.'"

But Gyory, an adjunct professor of political science at Albany-SUNY, believes that if the New York lawmakers can escape their primaries, their support for gay marriage could work to their advantage.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, center, hands pens to legislators after signing into law a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, at the Capitol in Albany, N.Y., on Friday, June 24, 2011. Behind Cuomo, from left, are Assemblyman Matthew Titone, Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, Sen. Thomas Duane and Sen. Jim Alesi.

"If?you put it up to a general election test in these areas it would probably play to the benefit of these legislators rather than to their political detriment.?

Alesi?said NOM and the money it is pouring into the state was not a factor?in his decision not to seek re-election.?He said they were ?nowhere on the radar? in Rochester except for a billboard they put up in?a remote part of his district. He also denied that a controversial local lawsuit over a personal injury factored into his decision. What it came down to, Alesi said, is that he had a strong Republican challenger, and had determined a bloody primary wouldn?t be worth ultimately losing a Republican-held seat to a Democrat.

?As much as I could easily have won in the general election, I thought it would be very difficult to get through a primary ? where I?d have to challenge my own party,? Alesi said.

He said some of his supporters encouraged him to leave the Republican Party so his marriage vote wouldn't be such a factor, but he didn't want to do it.

Sen. Roy J. McDonald, R- Stillwater, left, talks with his Chief of Staff Patrick E. Poleto during a session of the New York State Senate at the Capitol in Albany, N.Y., Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

?I thought also that it was very important if I were going to run for re-election that I would do it as a Republican because I was a Republican when I voted for marriage equality, and at the time, I said that I think it?s important for other legislatures and other states to know that Republicans can vote for things like marriage equality," he said, noting that he had said from early on, "Republicans can vote for this and go on with their political lives.?

To that end, The New York Times reported that billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Singer will give $1 million to begin a ?super PAC? called American Unity PAC with several other Republicans. It will provide support to Republican candidates who favor same-sex marriage. Singer helped amass some $250,000 for each of the Republican New York state senators after NOM announced its efforts.

The New York primaries are in June and in September, and it remains to be seen how the three lawmakers will fare. But Alesi said he is fine with how everything turned out after his marriage vote, even though it is largely responsible for the end of his senate career

"I took the greatest vote I could have taken ... I firmly and truly believe in equality," he said, remembering that at the time of the vote he told himself, "If this is what the price is, it?s fine with me, because I can?t imagine having the opportunity to do anything this historic and this personally fulfilling again ever in my career ... I am leaving very peacefully."

Giving to religious institutions drops for second year in a row. Why?

Giving to religious groups has slipped by a cumulative 3.7 percent since 2010. Still, religion remains America?s favorite charitable cause, with $95.88 billion in donations.

Church congregations may need to pass the offering plate again because giving to religious institutions has dropped for the second year in a row.

Charitable giving to the religious sector fell by 1.7 percent last year, according to the Giving USA 2012 report released this week. Since the start of 2010, giving to religious groups has slipped by a cumulative 3.7 percent (not adjusted for inflation).

This shows religion to be lagging in the evermore intense competition for donor dollars, even as other nonprofit sectors gain. Total charitable giving rose by 4 percent in 2011 to $298.4 billion. Of the eight sectors tracked by Giving USA, seven saw donations rise in both 2010 and 2011. Only religion lost ground.

Why is religion having a hard time?

?Declining attendance at religious services is part and parcel to the issue? of struggling to maintain or increase giving levels, says Robert Evans, a Philadelphia fundraising consultant for nonprofits and an author of the Giving USA 2012 report. ?If you have fewer people coming through the front door, then how do you do it??

But despite cutbacks in giving, religion remains America?s favorite charitable cause. With $95.88 billion in donations, faith-based organizations still collect far more than any other nonprofit segment. A distant second is education with $38.9 billion, followed by human services at $35.4 billion.

Yet religious institutions could be witnessing the start of a long-term slide, observers say. Precipitating factors, such as a weak economic recovery, portend more financial stress and hard choices about where institutions should cut in years ahead, according to David Roozen, director of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut.

?The recession exacerbated downward pressure on church finances,? Mr. Roozen says. ?You?ll likely see a continuation of this? as unemployment and wage stagnation limit how much churchgoers can give.

Large congregations have fared best in the recession?s aftermath, Roozen says, as they consume a larger share of a shrinking pie. Slumping donations have translated into painful staff cuts for small congregations and denominational offices. In one telling sign, the United Methodist Church this year did away with its longstanding policy of guaranteeing appointments for clergy as churches come to rely on fewer pastors and part-timers for ministry.

Shrinking attendance isn?t all that?s hampered the faithful?s fundraising efforts, according to Mr. Evans. Religious institutions have largely failed to keep pace with other types of organizations, such as colleges and hospitals, in deploying professional development teams. Synagogues that employ professional fundraisers have found the investment pays off, Evans says, but most congregations have no one trained in the art of asking for money.

?There?s no donor fatigue,? says Evans, who is managing director of EHL Consulting Group. ?But houses of worship ... need to fine-tune their message more strongly for the people who want to make this a better country.?

What?s more, religious institutions are exempt from financial disclosure requirements that bind other nonprofits. As donors become more discreet and sophisticated, Evans says, they?ve come to expect more transparency than religious bodies are used to supplying. Donors who value transparency might therefore respond more favorably to nonreligious appeals.

Egyptians find out their next president on Sunday

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians find out on Sunday whether their next president will be a former military officer or an Islamist from the army's old adversary, the Muslim Brotherhood, after a long week's wait since a vote to pick a successor to the deposed Hosni Mubarak.

Impatient Brotherhood supporters have been out on Cairo's Tahrir Square day and night since a call in midweek from their leaders to demand the current ruling generals cancel measures they say are designed to hem in the powers of the man they believe was elected last weekend, Islamist Mohamed Morsy.

Hundreds were there again on Saturday, chanting "Victory for Morsy!" and "Morsy, Morsy, Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest), before officials finally set a time for announcing the result.

The election committee will do so at news conference at 3 p.m. (9.00 a.m. EDT) on Sunday, committee official Hatem Bagato said on Saturday, after run-off voting was held on June 16-17.

The party atmosphere in the square anticipated what could be one of the most dramatic turns of events in the Middle East in decades - the emergence of an Islamist president of the most populous Arab nation.

A delay in announcing the result, initially scheduled for Thursday, was explained by officials as required to deal with appeals over local voting irregularities. But it has prompted Brotherhood concern that the military-led "deep state", left over when Mubarak was toppled last year, was trying to steal their victory, just as it routinely rigged votes in the past.

"We want the military council to announce the real results without forgery," said Hassan Eissa, 43, an accountant from north of Cairo who was demonstrating on the square. He accused the army of reneging on promises to hand over when it dissolved the Islamist-led parliament on the eve of the presidential run-off and then took for itself legislative powers by decree.

"They have no right," Eissa said. "Egyptians shouldn't be under any kind of guardianship after the revolution."

A Morsy win would create a dramatic new configuration for Egypt's politics. Supporters of religious rule will be delighted but others, including many who fought on Tahrir Square to end dictatorship, will be anxious at what it means for minorities, women, secular values and Egypt's dealings with the West.

Reformist politician Mohamed ElBaradei said he had been in contact with the military and Morsy's camp to avoid a showdown, but said he was worried that if Shafik were declared winner "we are in for a lot of instability and violence ... a major uprising." His comments were carried by the CNN website.

Violence by hardline Islamists in Tunisia, whose revolt inspired that in Egypt, has troubled many Egyptian liberals.

On Saturday, a group of liberal and leftist groups announced the formation of an alternative "civil front", seeking support from those wanting neither military nor religious rule.

"Those who are attacking the military council, have allied with it when their interests were in line," said Ahmed Said, head of the liberal Free Egyptians Party, noting links between the Muslim Brotherhood and ruling generals in the past year.

TALKS

Senior figures from both the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and the Brotherhood told Reuters they had been in discreet talks this week on political arrangements, though the army has made clear it will not go back on what critics called a "soft coup" aimed at delaying a handover to full civilian rule.

It will neither cancel the dissolution of the Islamist-led parliament nor a decree by which it reserved legislative powers for the council, curbing the president's power.

Presented with a take-it-or-leave-it choice, the Brotherhood may find a compromise to pull their protesters off the streets. Years of conflict have made it a wary organization, and it has cooperated with the council in the 16 months since Mubarak fell.

Electoral and military officials told Reuters during the week and as late as Friday that the Brotherhood candidate had a narrow but clear lead over former general Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister. But nothing is certain.

One newspaper, Shorouk, headlined: "Morsy to be announced president today ... Unless."

Morsy, like Shafik, has promised to build a government that brings in people from across the political spectrum. Many of those who launched the Arab Spring uprising were dismayed when more centrist candidates, neither from the army nor the Brotherhood, were eliminated in the first round vote last month.

While some grudgingly backed Shafik to block religious rule, others half-heartedly supported Morsy to prevent what they saw as a return to the old regime. Among those protesting on Tahrir Square on Saturday, Cairo lawyer Atef Rehan said: "I'm not from the Brotherhood and I voted for Morsy only reluctantly.

"But I am here to support their demands."

A 60-year-old, U.S.-educated engineer, the bearded and bespectacled Morsy is not a familiar figure to Egyptians, some of whom ridicule him as the movement's "spare tire" after his campaign was launched following the exclusion from the race on a technicality of a much better known leader, Khairat al-Shater.

Both sides recall the bloodshed that ravaged another North African state, Algeria, when military rulers thwarted an Islamist movement's triumph at the ballot box in the 1990s, and appear willing to renew the tentative cooperation they built up after Mubarak's overthrow and step back from an outright clash.

An Islamist insurrection in Egypt in the 1990s also cost hundreds of lives. That uprising was not supported by the Brotherhood, which renounced violence decades ago as a means to achieve political change in Egypt.

WEIGHING OPPOSITION

Delay in the final tally of votes was due to many appeals being heard by the electoral commission, officials said. But it also gave more time for talks to defuse tensions.

Discussions between generals and Islamists, whose violent confrontation has marked Egypt for decades, were assuming Morsy would win narrowly.

"We have met with them to discuss how to get out of this crisis after parliament was dissolved and the new president's powers curbed," Shater, who runs the Brotherhood's finances and strategic planning, told Reuters - although he added they were some way from reaching any kind of agreement.

Major General Mamdouh Shaheen, a member of SCAF, confirmed the recent meetings and repeated the army's commitment to a democratic transition. But he echoed a strong statement issued by SCAF on Friday that rejected the Brotherhood's demands.

"The constitutional decree is the exclusive authority of the military council," Shaheen told Reuters.

In a brusque statement read on state television as Egyptians were completing their Friday prayers, SCAF criticized the Brotherhood's premature announcement of the election result and said protesters must not disrupt daily life.

Morsy shot back that the generals were defying the will of the people and said protests would go on. But he praised the army as "patriotic" and urged a rapid election result.

In a country where virtually no one can remember an election before last year that was not rigged, trust is low, not least among Brotherhood officials, many of whom, like Morsy, were jailed under Mubarak for their political activities.

The same electoral commission that handed 90 percent of a November 2010 parliamentary vote to Mubarak's supporters - a result that fuelled the protests that brought him down a few weeks later - sits in judgment on the new presidency.

Yankees won't play chicken with Mets' Francisco

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter looked at the front page of a tabloid, the one that had a composite photo of his smiling face atop a chicken's body and the headline "Cluck You!"

He just shook his head.

"What happened?" Jeter asked.

What happened was that Mets closer Frank Francisco told the New York Post this week, "I can't wait to face those chickens" before his team hosted the crosstown rival Yankees in a three-game series starting Friday night at Citi Field.

Jeter and his teammates were more confused by the comment than upset by it.

"I can't be insulted by something I don't understand," Jeter said.

With a big grin, teammate Nick Swisher added: "I don't even know what it means. ... I don't even know what to say."

Alex Rodriguez wanted to know what kind of chicken: "I like mine grilled."

Francisco did not chicken out Friday afternoon, explaining what he meant by his odd comment. He said he thinks the Yankees often protest the umpires' calls.

"I (made) a simple comment because they complain a lot for everything," Francisco said.

In his first season with the Mets, the closer did not pitch when the Yankees swept the Subway Series in the Bronx from June 8-10. But he told the Post he is excited to have a chance to strike out the side in the final series of the regular season between the teams.

Francisco has done it before, whiffing Jeter, Rodriguez and Jason Giambi in the seventh inning on May, 21, 2004, for the Texas Rangers.

Yankees catcher Russell Martin, who hit a game-ending homer off Mets reliever Jon Rauch on June 10, dismissed the comments.

"We'll see if we're chicken when he gets in the game," Martin said.

Francisco got his shot at the Yankees in the ninth. And although he didn't strike out the side, he still got the job done. The right-hander worked a scoreless inning to close out the Mets' 6-4 victory, retiring Mark Teixeira on a game-ending popup with two runners aboard for his 18th save in 21 chances.

Never has chicken played so prominent a role in a Yankees story line since the fake George Steinbrenner agreed to trade George Costanza to Tyler Chicken for a fermented chicken drink and other poultry products on an episode of "Seinfeld."

On Friday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said three chicken companies inquired about sponsoring the Subway Series this weekend.

Mets manager Terry Collins isn't about to start disciplining his players for speaking their minds.

"I'm not going to hang out in the clubhouse and watch what guys say," Collins said. "We're grown men. Frank, if that's the way he feels - I don't think he meant to stir the pot when we played these guys. They're good enough already. It is what it is."

Girardi doesn't think his team needs extra motivation.

"It doesn't really mean anything," Girardi said. "What means something is what you do on the field."

Hill bargainers: Student loan deal seems near

(AP) ? Congressional bargainers seem near an agreement that would avert a July 1 doubling of interest rates on federal loans to 7.4 million college students and end an election-year battle between President Barack Obama and Congress, Senate aides from both parties said Friday.

Both sides said they were moving toward a deal on how to pay the measure's $6 billion price tag, the chief source of partisan conflict.

The goal is to push legislation through Congress next week so the current 3.4 percent interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans can be preserved for another year. A 2007 law gradually reduced interest rates on the loans but required them to balloon back to 6.8 percent this July 1 in a cost-saving maneuver.

On another front, the two sides were also close to an agreement to overhaul federal transportation programs, according to House and Senate aides from both parties. Negotiations were expected to continue through the weekend, with votes expected next week on either a major transportation bill or an extension of current programs, said the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the talks.

For weeks, Obama has ridiculed Republicans for not moving quickly to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling, a stance that Democrats have hoped will boost his support among young voters who broadly backed him in the 2008 election. With college costs and student debt growing steadily, the issue ties directly into concerns about the economy and jobs that polls show dominate voters' worries.

Though some rank-and-file GOP lawmakers have opposed letting the government set the rates, Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and GOP congressional leaders have backed the one-year extension. The remaining dispute has been over how to pay for it.

Republicans have accused Obama of creating a phony issue and drawing out the battle in an attempt to reap political points. In late May, they proposed several options to pay for the measure, all of which were culled from budget savings Obama himself had proposed in the past, but they said the White House was ignoring them.

"Even though the White House refuses to respond to our bipartisan approach, Senate Democrats are finally working with us, and a solution is within reach ? despite the president's failure to act," said Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The talks have involved aides to McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Democrats said the White House has been kept abreast of the talks, while Republicans said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been kept informed but hasn't participated in the negotiations.

According to Democratic aides, negotiators are approaching a deal to cover the bill's costs by charging companies more to insure pensions and changing rules so companies take fewer tax deductions for their pension contributions. Reid proposed both of those ideas this month.

They said additional money would come from a list of options McConnell has offered, probably one to limit federal subsidies of undergraduates' loans to six years. The government does not begin charging interest on Stafford loans until after students graduate, which can take longer than six years.

"While we're not there, we're well down the road. I think we can get something done," Reid told reporters Thursday. He said McConnell and Boehner "are compromising just as we are and hope we can get something done."

If allowed to double, the higher 6.8 percent rate would apply only to new subsidized Stafford loans for undergraduates approved starting on July 1 and would not affect existing loans.

According to the Education Department, 7.4 million students are expected to get new Stafford loans in the year beginning July 1, with each borrowing an average $4,226. A doubling of interest rates would add about $1,000 to the costs of the average loan, which students typically pay off over 10 or more years.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said last month that student loan debt grew this year to $904 billion, even as other types of consumer debt were falling.

In April, the Republican-run House ignored a White House veto threat and approved a GOP bill extending the lower loan rates for a year paid for by abolishing a preventive health program treasured by Democrats.

In May, Republicans in the Democratic-led Senate derailed a Democratic measure extending the rates and paid for by boosting payroll tax collections on high-earning owners of some privately held companies.

Angelina Jolie Donates $100,000 to UN on World Refugee Day

Who says celebrity can't be used for good?

Angelina Jolie marked the 20th of June - World Refugee Day 2012 - with a donation of $100,000 for the U.N.’s work in helping Syrian refugees.

“Unfortunately, the world is producing displaced people faster than it is producing solutions to displacement. And the solutions are not exclusively humanitarian, they are also political,” the 37-year-old actress said in a statement.

Angelina Jolie's Lips

“The international community should rededicate itself to preventing conflict, addressing it when it erupts, and solving it more quickly, for that is the only way to create durable solutions for the refugees whose strength inspires us on this World Refugee Day.”

Seeing Angelina Jolie as Maleficent is very cool, but seeing her continue to wield her fame and fortune for important causes is an inspiration.

Her full message appears below:

UNHCR believes even 1 person forced to flee is too many. And it’s true. Every individual refugee matters. Each has their own story. Each has suffered and survived more than I could ever bear. And yet, they rise up to live another day.

We risk forgetting the individual when we speak in numbers, but the numbers tell an important story. In the past year 4.3 million people have become displaced. There are still 2.7 million refugees from Afghanistan. 12 million people are stateless. And for the fifth consecutive year the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide exceeded 42 million.

Sadly, a person who becomes a refugee is likely to remain one for many years – often stuck in a camp or living precariously in the city of a developing nation. 70 per cent of refugees under UNHCR’s protection have been in this situation for more than five years. Their safety and well-being depend on the continued generosity of those countries who have kept their borders open to refugees, and on the vital efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance wherever and whenever it is necessary.

Unfortunately, the world is producing displaced people faster than it is producing solutions to displacement. And the solutions are not exclusively humanitarian – they are also political. The international community should rededicate itself to preventing conflict, addressing it when it erupts, and solving it more quickly, for that is the only way to create durable solutions for the refugees whose strength inspires us on this World Refugee Day.

LG Optimus L5 to complete the Lstyle ensemble later this month

The final middle piece of LG's L-style puzzle, the 4-inch Optimus L5, is pegged to arrive in the UK, Germany and France in the next two weeks. The sub-10mm phone packs the same design elements seen in the rest of the L-style series, meaning it'll also look uncannily similar to both the incoming Optimus Vu and Prada Phone 3.0. Aside from Android 4.0, the mid-ranger doesn't house that many surprises underneath those designer lines. Ho-hum specifications include a single core 800MHz processor, 4GB of (microSD-expandable) internal storage and a 5-megapixel camera. Once it's toured Western Europe, the device has plans to see the Middle East, Asia, Central and South America, although LG isn't saying whether the Optimus L5 has plans for a visit to North America.
