PST: Down 0-4, Arsenal eventually wins 7-5

source:

?

That was one writer?s reaction to what happened at the Madejski Stadium in Reading, England, where the Capital One Cup contest between the Royals and visiting Arsenal just ended. The final score was 7-5, Arsenal ? the most goals in a league cup match since 1996 (thanks @InfostradaLive).

And the scoreline doesn?t come anywhere close to describing how epic this match was.

Starting with an opener from Jason Roberts in the 12th, Reading rattled off four goals in 25 minutes, building a huge lead thanks to Mikele Leigertwood, Noel Hunt, and an own goal credited to Laurent Koscielny. Theo Walcott pulled one back during first half stoppage time, but holy crap ? four goals against Arsenal in a half? The Gunners have allowed only six in nine Premier League matches this season.

Past the hour mark, it looked like Reading would be fine. Even after substitute Olivier Giroud cut the lead to two in the 64th minute, there was little reason to worry. Arsenal was as frantic as any desperate team would be, but minutes before full time, the score remained 4-2.

Then Koscielny scored in the 89th minute ? into the correct goal, this time. It was 4-3, and when stoppage time rolled around, there was Walcott again. With a goal that could have only been scored with the permission of Alex Ferguson himself, Walcott equalized in the 96th minute, sending the match to extra time tied at four.

Just before the first break, forgotten striker Marouane Chamakh put Arsenal in front only to see Pavel Progrebnyak pull that back five minutes from time. At the 115-minute-mark, it was 5-5.

But then stoppage time happened, again. And there was Theo Walcott, again. His third goal of the night (each coming after the fourth official had raised his sign) put Arsenal in front 6-5 in the 121st minute. When Chamakh added another two minutes later, the Gunners had their winning margin.

As Okwonga notes, the turns, expectations and denials of this match were trolling of the highest order, particularly from Walcott. One amazing, unforgettable troll.

Homeowners | Flood Insurance | Hurricane Sandy | FEMA

Many homeowners in flood-drenched New York and New Jersey may find that their insurance policies do not cover costs due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, the New York Times reported.

For homeowners with federally-backed mortgages in high flood-risk areas, flood insurance is mandatory, the Times said. However, many homeowners forget to renew flood insurance or wrongly assume that homeowners? policies will cover flood-related damage.?

?After many events, we realize that many people who were supposed to have [flood insurance] coverage were not covered,? Erwann Michel-Kerjan, managing director of the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania, told the Times.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, will offer loans and some grants to homeowners who are not covered, at an estimated cost of between $5 billion and $10 billion to taxpayers, the paper said.

And even those who are insured may find that not all costs are covered. ?Policies on residences of any type are limited to coverage limits of $250,000 on the structures and $100,000 of contents, and businesses are bound by $500,000 in building coverage and another $500,000 in contents,? the Times said. Lessons from Irene help retailers cope with Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Retailers preparing for the worst of Hurricane Sandy as it hit the East Coast on Monday looked back to only a year ago to Hurricane Irene for a blueprint.

From when to get product into the region before a storm hits, to keeping track of workers when the hurricane comes, Irene provided important lessons, retailers said.

"Irene was something unprecedented last year. We learned a number of things from that," Terry Johnson, Lowe's senior vice president of store operations, told Reuters.

Irene which ranked as the fifth-costliest hurricane in U.S. history, slammed much of the U.S. East Coast last year. The lessons from that destructive hurricane have helped many chains prepare better this year.

For instance, Lowe's started deploying products like generators, tarps, batteries and electric cables to distribution centers early last week to avoid facing delays due to potential road closures. The company, the second-largest U.S. home improvement chain, started stocking up on products even before it could get a good read of the exact path of Hurricane Sandy.

"We are thinking a little bit bigger (this time)," Johnson told Reuters by phone.

Products that retailers moved closer to where the hurricane will hit also include bottled water, flashlights and dry food.

For Target Corp , the lesson from Irene was to have the products in the region five to six days in advance.

"What we've learned in responding to these in the past is finding the sweet spot in reloading the area with product," Target spokeswoman Amy Reilly said of having supplies in a region for shoppers to stock up on during a hurricane.

Hurricane Irene hit the region on the final weekend of August 2011, causing flooding and power outages during the back-to-school shopping season, one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year.

If there is good news for retailers, Hurricane Sandy is hitting in what is typically a slow time, between back-to-school and the all-important holiday shopping season.

"The timing is far enough away from any major holiday, so it's unlikely to have a meaningful impact on the overall holiday sales unless there is a catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina proportions," said Joel Bines, managing director of AlixPartners' retail practice, referring to the storm that devastated New Orleans in 2005.

Still, Target, Sears , Starbucks , Walmart , Home Depot and other closed hundreds of stores Monday as the hurricane hit.

"Every day lost for a lot of these retailers, if they're nice-to-have items, they're just sales you're just not going to get back," said Evan Gold, a senior vice president at Planalytics, which advises retailers on business weather intelligence.

Gold estimated that most major U.S. chains have at least 10 percent of their stores in Sandy's path.

Spending on generators and storm clean up is also likely to cut into budgets people have for holiday items, he said.

LOGISTICS MATTER

Irene, and other hurricanes, also taught retailers how logistics related to their employees and stores.

Sears spokesman Chris Brathwaite said that from Hurricane Irene and, more recently, Hurricane Isaac, the retailer is better able to track its workers and determine if they have been affected by the storm and needs support.

The retailer also has a better communication system in place for notification if a store is going to close.

Other retailers learned which stores could serve many customers.

"We looked very closely at store sales trends from Irene and which stores would be most essential for us to keep open to serve communities with multiple locations," said Eric Harkreader, a spokesman for drugstore chain operator Rite Aid .

"Also like Irene, we have generators positioned strategically around the storm's path in the hopes we'll be able to move in quickly and get the most essential stores back up and running quickly should they lose power," he said.

Of course, if the Internet - or the mobile device - keeps working, a big storm could benefit some retailers.

"Online ordering may be up. It is a good day to order holiday gifts if the kids aren't driving you crazy," said Al Sambar, retail strategist at consulting firm, Kurt Salmon.

tax shelter, ira, investment taxation, tax efficiency | DINKS Finance

Hello Folks,

Factoring in the effect of taxation on your goals?and investment returns is essential if you are fortunate enough to directly own financial assets.

The need to?minimize?taxes is obvious if you think about it, but let me just spell it out for you. ?Let us assume you are an average American making?$50,233 per year. ? Let?s also figure you?ve manged to scrape together $10,000 to invest. ?We can also take it for granted that you make your investment for 5 years in a conventional type of asset (such as bonds, stocks, a REIT, or some sort of direct position in real estate). ? If you are in the 25% tax bracket (which you are if your income is $50,233 and you file single on your taxes), then the cost of taxes on your investment returns looks something like this:

Investment Type Tax Rate Return Before Taxes Tax Adjusted Return Difference on $10,000 Invested Over 5 Years
?Bond Interest ?25% ?5% ?3.75% ?$741.82
?REIT Dividends ?25% ?6% ?4.5% ?$920.44
?Stock Dividends ?15% ?2% ?1.5% ?$267.97
?Short- Term Capital ? ? ? Gains ?25% ?10% ?7.5% ?$1,748.81

For most people taxes are going to take a big bite out of your investing returns ? the hit gets bigger as your return increases and as the amount you invest gets bigger. ? Because of this, you probably want to think about some easy and legal ways to get your cash away from the IRS. ?What can you do to minimize investment taxation? ?There are a lot of ideas floating around on the web but they basically break down into three strategies:

1) Use Tax Sheltered Accounts: ?There has been a lot written about use of IRA?s, ROTH IRAs and 401k/403b, so we won?t say too much about these here. ?The bottom line is that there are lots of options for retail investors who want to legally get away from taxes. ?Pretty much, if you don?t have an IRA or a Roth IRA, get one. ?If you?re not contributing to your 401k/403b, do it before you mess around with a taxable account. ?Other options include looking into 529 college savings plans, or Coverdale?education savings accounts.

Finally, in terms of gaming the tax shelter system, one additional trick that?s been going around is socking money into a regular IRA and then converting the regular IRA into a ROTH IRA. ?This is useful if you make too much income to qualify for a ROTH IRA. ?Since we?ve capped out of being able to invest in our ROTHs, we are looking more closely into this. ?We know it is feasible and legal, but will be doing more research to do a separate post on what the impact of having a mingled IRA account, comprising of both ROTH funds and non-ROTH investments.

2) Purchase Tax Advantaged Investments: This is a favorite trick of high net worth investors. ?They tend to buy a lot of tax free bonds, or buy into Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs). If you are unfamiliar with these, they trade like a regular stock, but they are taxed as return of capital, rather than as regular income. ?Another option is tax free mutual funds. ?Finally, it may be possible to structure more complicated real estate deals, such as buying your college age child a home.

3) Pay Attention to Tax Efficiency! ?For example, you might consider growth stocks instead of dividend stocks in your taxable accounts to minimize the amount of taxes you need to pay on your dividends. ?Alternatively, if you are going to purchase high yielding bonds or preferred stocks, consider shifting around your purchases and holding these in a tax sheltered account rather than a regular taxable account. ?This is because the higher yields on these types of assets mean the IRS?s pound of flesh is bigger.

Folks ? lots of people find discussing taxes dull, but if the feds are going to take 15% to 25% of your investment capital, you?d darned well better pay attention. ?It?s probably going to be your single largest investing expense and can have a BIG impact on your investing returns.

Best,

James

Turkish police fire tear gas at banned secularist march

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of secularists protesting at a banned rally in the capital on Monday against what they see as an increasingly authoritarian and Islamist government.

The scenes of chanting men and women draped in Turkish flags and carrying banners portraying the country's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk highlight a longstanding division in Turkish society between staunch secularists on the one hand and more conservative religious Turks on the other.

Although Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan won a third term in power last year with 50 percent of the vote, many secular Turks fear his socially conservative AK Party has Islamist tendencies that threaten the secular republic founded by Ataturk.

"They are trying to turn us into another Iran or some kind of neo-Ottoman Empire. We are against this," said retired 64-year-old Erdem Sevinc.

"We are here today to send a message to those who are trying to destroy the principles of this republic," he said.

The local government in Ankara, also controlled by Erdogan's AK Party, banned the rally citing "intelligence" it would be used for "provocation", a move protesters said was designed to silence government opponents.

"Why have they banned this march? Because they are scared. They are scared of course," said 68-year-old Metin Alkan, sporting a black tie emblazoned with Ataturk's face.

"Look at us, do we look like a danger?" he said, laughing.

Waving Turkish flags several thousand people gathered outside the old parliament building in the city center to try to march to Ataturk's mausoleum to mark the 89th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

"Resign government! Damn you Tayyip!" the crowd chanted, referring to the prime minister.

"The day will come when the AK Party will give account to the people," they shouted.

"We are Mustafa Kemal's soldiers! Turkey is secular and will remain secular!" others shouted.

But the marchers were kept back by a barricade of riot police who began firing tear gas and water cannon into the crowd, which included children and elderly men and women, as some people tried to storm the police blockade.

TEAR GAS, WATER CANNON

Some in the crowd threw projectiles at the line of police, prompting them to fire more tear gas and water cannon. People pushed and shoved to get out of the line of fire while others were doubled up on the ground, coughing from the gas.

Several young girls were carried out of the crowd unconscious, drenched by the water cannon.

"Why are they doing this? This is really bad. We are citizens of this country, we are not enemies," said 21-year-old computer studies student Melisa Cilli.

"They want another kind of system here, a dictatorship, with Erdogan as the dictator," she said.

Several hours later police removed the barricades allowing the crowds to march to the mausoleum some three kilometers away.

Erdogan was first elected a decade ago with an overwhelming majority and has presided over a period of unprecedented prosperity, winning him admirers among Western nations keen to portray Turkey as a democratic example in a troubled region.

But that success story has been undermined by growing criticism of the authoritarian style of his rule.

Hundreds of politicians, academics and journalists are in jail on charges of plotting against the government, while more than 300 army officers were convicted last month of conspiring against Erdogan almost a decade ago, and handed long jail terms.

Media watchdog the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said this month that Turkey had jailed more reporters than Iran, China or Eritrea.

Secular Turks also point to increasing restrictions on alcohol and changes to the education system introduced by the AK Party as a sign the country is becoming more Islamic.

Erdogan has also forged close ties with Islamist governments in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere in the Arab world.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) set up by Ataturk in 1924, joined the march and later criticized the police's handling of the event.

"Those people only had Turkish flags in their hands. The state had police, tear gas, water cannon and tanks. Hey, where are you going? Are you going to war? You don't need permission to celebrate the republic," he said.

Insights into new therapy for rare form of cystic fibrosis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Scientists at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto have established that a drug recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat a rare form of cystic fibrosis works in an unconventional way. Their results reveal new possibilities for treating various forms of cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease afflicting about 70,000 people around the world. Cystic fibrosis patients carry a defective gene that disables or destroys its protein product, which normally regulates the transport of ions across cell borders. When that transport is disrupted, the viscosity of the mucus coating certain organs becomes too thick. A characteristic feature of the disease is thick mucus buildup in the air passages, which causes difficulty breathing and recurring infections.

While the FDA approved the drug VX-770 (also known by the trade names Kalydeco and Ivacaftor) to ease breathing in people with cystic fibrosis caused by a particular mutation in the CFTR protein (the acronym is short for cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator), exactly how VX-770 worked in those patients was unknown.

Scientists have understood for some time that normal CFTR regulation requires modification of the protein and binding of a small, energy-providing molecule -- adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. But, in their recent Journal of Biological Chemistry "Paper of the Week," Christine Bear and colleagues report that the drug opens both normal and mutant CFTR channels without ATP. Their results indicate that the compound binds to a different site on CTFR than ATP. Significantly, this finding may be useful in developing therapies for cystic fibrosis caused by various CFTR mutations that, like the G551D mutation that was studied, impair ATP-mediated channel regulation.

Bear's group determined how VX-770 works after developing a new experimental system that may have potential for discovering drugs that target the basic defects caused by CFTR mutations, Bear says. The system is useful for identifying compounds that interact with rare mutations such as G551D as well as the major CFTR mutant F508del, she said.

Giants take 2-0 lead over Tigers in Game 3

DETROIT (AP) ? Ryan Vogelsong pitched out a bases-loaded jam by getting Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to pop out, Gregor Blanco hit a go-ahead triple and San Francisco led the Detroit Tigers 2-0 after six innings Saturday night as the Giants tried to take a 3-0 World Series lead.

Vogelsong became only the third pitcher to make four straight starts in a single postseason in which he allowed no more than one run, giving up five hits in 5 2-3 innings with four walks and three strikeouts. He induced double-play grounders to escape trouble in the first and third innings.

Blanco hit a run-scoring triple off the wall in right-center field in the second inning against Anibal Sanchez and scored on Brandon Crawford's single.

Detroit was 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position on the night and 1 for 11 in the Series. No team has ever lost the first three games and rebounded to win the title.

Held scoreless in 15 straight innings, the Tigers have gotten little production from the middle of their order. Cabrera, the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, is 2 for 8 with one RBI and Prince Fielder, signed to a $214 million contract in January, is 1 for 9 with no RBIs.

While Detroit never trailed during its AL championship series sweep of the New York Yankees, the Tigers have not led in the World Series.

Vogelsong, who entered 2-0 with 1.42 ERA in three postseason starts, has traveled through 10 minor league cities plus two in Japan over the last 15 years, also making winter ball stops at the Arizona Fall League and Venezuela. In between, the 35-year-old has gone 37-38 during parts of eight seasons with the Giants and Pittsburgh. He has gone seven straight starts allowing one run or none, dating to mid-September.

Sanchez, acquired from Miami in July, showed rust from his 12-day layoff. Hunter Pence walked on four pitches starting the second, ending Sanchez's streak of 95 right-handed batters without a walk since Aug. 22, according to STATS LLC. One out later, Blanco pulled a full-count pitch off an advertising board on the fence.

Detroit pulled the infield in ? manager Jim Leyland was criticized by some for leaving his middle infielders back with Game 2 scoreless in the seventh ? and Hector Sanchez struck out. Brandon Crawford, the No. 9 hitter, lofted a single to short center that Austin Jackson overran for an error.

With the crowd of 42,262 quieted and the Tigers' infielders looking dismayed, Sanchez retired Angel Pagan on an inning-ending grounder to first.

Sanchez allowed five hits in the first six innings, struck out seven and walked one, throwing 104 pitches ? 31 in the second.

San Francisco, seeking its second title in three years, is brimming with confidence. The Giants entered 8-1 in the postseason when scoring first.

Detroit, 4-0 at home in the postseason, had plenty of chances.

Quintin Berry walked with one out in the first and Cabrera, presented with a dark blue and gold crown by Major League Baseball before the game, singled to left. But Fielder bounced into a 4-6-3 double play, dropping to 0 for 5 with runners on in the series and 1 for 19 versus righties in the postseason.

Omar Infante hit a broken-bat single with one out in the third and Jackson reached on an infield hit, beating Pablo Sandoval's throw on a four-hopper to third. Berry hit into a 4-6-3 double play on the next pitch.

Alex Avila and Infante singled with one out in the fifth and Jackson's walk loaded the bases, causing pitching coach Dave Righetti to make a trip to the mound and the crowd to start to wave white rally towels.

Berry, who had played just four games above Double-A before this year, swung over a 91 mph pitch and, with Tim Lincecum and Jose Mijares warming up in the bullpen, Cabrera popped to shortstop.

After Vogelsong walked Andy Dirks with two outs in the sixth, Lincecum relieved for the second time in the Series and retired Jhonny Peralta on a flyout.

With the shift to the AL ballpark, Giants manager Bruce Bochy inserted Hector Sanchez as his designated hitter in the No, 8 slot and dropped Crawford to ninth.

Alternating catchers, the Tigers went with Game 1 starter Avila in place of Gerald Laird and made two switches in the outfield. Berry started in left, with Delmon Young moving to DH, and Dirks replaced Avisail Garcia in right.

The gametime temperature of 47 was a 17-degree drop from Game 2, and the ivy on the center fielder batter's background has started to turn autumn red and brown. The Tigers' starters wore long sleeves and the Giants' regulars a mixture of long and three-quarters, with only Vogelsong in short sleeves. Four of the six umpires wore gloves, with plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth and Brian O'Nora at first going with bare hands.

Matt Cain, coming off a Game 7 win over St. Louis in the NL championship series, starts for San Francisco in Game 4 on Sunday night. Max Scherzer starts for Detroit, his first appearance since completing the Tigers' ALCS sweep of the Yankees.

NOTES: Vogelsong joined Blue Moon Odom in 1972 and Burt Hooton in 1981 in making four straight starts in a postseason allowing one run or none. ... Cabrera has reached safely in his first 23 postseason games, two shy of Boog Powell's record, according to STATS LLC. ... Zooey Deschanel, who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Game 4 last year, became only the second person in a decade to perform the national anthem before Series games in consecutive years. John Legend sang it before Game 2 in 2009 and the 2010 opener.

Kiran Kumar Reddy govt nixes Knowledge Park ... - Real Estate India

??|?? October 28, 2012 ?? 10:08am ??|Contributed by manoja

HYDERABAD: In yet another reversal of the decisions taken by the Y S Rajasekhara Reddy regime, chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday cancelled the Lepakshi Knowledge Park project planned in 8848 acres in the SEZ at Gorantla and Chilamattur mandals of Anantapur district. The knowledge park, floated by Lepakshi Knowledge Hub Pvt Ltd (LKHP), a Bangalore-based company, is dubbed as the biggest ?land loot? that took place during the YSR regime.

LKHP, which got the land allotted, claimed that it would set up an aerospace & defence cluster, education & innovation hub, logistics & free trade warehousing zone, agro food science & technology park, a heritage wellness village, health & wellness cluster, media & entertainment city and a global village along with a health R&D facility and universities. What surprised many is that LKHP fraudulently shifted the ownership of the land to another company, which is not even an associate, which later pledged the land with various banks and raised huge funds.

Both the then chief minister YSR and the promoter offered everything under the sun to induce the farmers and DKT patta holders to part with their land. The company promised more than a lakh direct jobs and another half lakh indirect jobs. A MoA was signed on December 22, 2008, between APIIC and LKHP to establish a global knowledge hub. Even though four years had elapsed, there has been no progress in the project implementation except the local realtors making a quick buck by touting the Lepakshi project as a great landmark that would change the economy of the region. An official who was associated with the project told STOI that the promoter violated the norms by mortgaging the land and diverted the money to other purposes.

?As per the MoA, the promoter can mortgage the land and raise funds to invest in the project for which the land was allotted. But, in this case, the promoter delegated the rights of the land to another company which is illegal,? he said. According to sources in the industries department, the APIIC, some time back, had investigated the activities of the promoter and found massive irregularities.

Lepakshi land pledged with banks by YSR aide

LKHP had delegated the rights over the land to a company owned by a close associate of YSR who in turn pledged the land with banks to raise funds. The third company reportedly mortgaged 4,397 acres of the land allotted to Lepakshi and raised Rs 790 crore from various banks. ?About Rs 300 crore was raised from Canara Bank by pledging 1,054 acres and Rs 250 crore from Punjab National Bank by mortgaging 756.65 acres. Similarly funds were raised from IL & FS, IDBI Bank, Bank of India, State Bank of Hyderabad and Tata Capital,? the sources said.

Even the CAG also found fault with the land allotment and listed the Lepakshi knowledge Park as one of the major land irregularities committed by the YSR government. This is the fourth cancellation of YSR?s dream projects by Kiran Kumar Reddy, the other three being Brahamani Steels, Bayyaram mines and RAK Economic City.

Streamlining the land allocation to the various ventures, the state government last month announced its land allotment policy. One of the clauses in the policy empowers the government to review the progress of the project and take back the land if the land was not used for the intended purpose. According to the sources, the chief minister invoked this provision to cancel the Lepakshi Knowledge Park project. APIIC, which signed the MoA with LKHP, has been instructed by the CM to initiate the process to recover the entire land from the company.

Pick the right dog at the shelter

By Kelly Marshall

One of the saddest experiences for many dogs is becoming lost, separated or abandoned by their family. Often dogs become homeless when an owner has to move to a new town or city and is not able to take the dog with them. Many times when owners pass away the family doesn?t want to keep the dog and turns them over to a rescue.

There are many different breed rescues located all around the world. These organizations are usually staffed entirely by volunteers that rescue abandoned dogs and care for them while looking for suitable homes. Often the volunteers choose to provide homes for the dogs so they are not kept in kennels. This process also allows the volunteers to get to know the dogs and see how they interact with children and other pets within their household. Some of the ?foster? homes also offer some basic training for the rescued dogs if they do not have a good understanding of the basic commands.

Dogs that are brought into the rescue with a known history are often easier to find homes for. Usually puppies are not brought to a rescue, but there are often a high number of senior dogs left at rescue shelters that are very hard to find homes for.

Benefits To Getting A Dog From A Shelter
For those families that would like to get a dog that already has basic training, is housebroken, and also is spayed or neutered a dog from a rescue is a perfect option. Often these dogs are very well trained and there is a good record of the interaction that they have with their foster families. These families work to socialize the dogs as well as find out if they are good with children, other dogs as well as pets. Volunteers that work in the shelters are very familiar with the breeds and their characteristics.

The dogs from shelters are always spayed or neutered. The cost to adopt a dog from a shelter is often less than most vets fees are for just the spay or neuter. All vaccinations are up to date and the dogs are usually treated for fleas, parasites and heartworms prior to adoption.

Dogs from a rescue are often very loving dogs that are eager to find a good home and a permanent place to live. Many people that have adopted a dog from a shelter report that the dogs are very affectionate and loyal, almost as if they realize that they have been specially chosen.

The cost to obtain a dog from a rescue shelter is usually between one and two hundred dollars. Often dogs that have required a lot of veterinarian services may require an additional amount of a donation to cover the added expenses. All the fees obtained from the adopted dogs are used to buy food, provide shelter and veterinarians services as well as advertise and find homes for other dogs in the shelter.

If you want to get a dog of a particular breed consider adopting one of the many dogs currently in a rescue shelter. If you have a shelter in your area you also may wish to volunteer to help dogs in the shelter or even become a foster family for dogs looking for permanent homes.

Self-Improvement: Secrets and Tips

50 Life Secrets and Tips
  1. Memorize something everyday. Not only will this leave your brain sharp and your memory functioning, you will also have a huge library of quotes to bust out at any moment. Poetry, sayings and philosophies are your best options.
  2. Constantly try to reduce your attachment to possessions. Those who are heavy-set with material desires will have a lot of trouble when their things are taken away from them or lost. Possessions do end up owning you, not the other way around. Become a person of minimal needs and you will be much more content.
  3. Develop an endless curiosity about this world.Become an explorer and view the world as your jungle. Stop and observe all of the little things as completely unique events. Try?new?things. Get out of your comfort zone and try to experience as many different environments and sensations as possible. This world has so much to offer, so why not take advantage of it?
  4. Remember people?s namesso that they feel appreciated and for your own future benefit when you want something from that person. To do this, say their name back to them when they introduce themselves. Then repeat the name in your head a number of times until you are sure you have it. Continue to use their name in conversation as much as possible to remove any chance of forgetting it. If you?re still having trouble, make up a rhyme about their name: ?Dan the Man? or ?Natalie flatters me.?
  5. Get fit! It?s ridiculous to think that we have one body, one sole means of functioning, and people are too lazy to take care of themselves. Fit bodies lead to better health, confidence and more success with romantic endeavors. I?d say those are 3?very?good reasons to get in shape.
  6. Learn to focus only on the present. The past is unchangeable so it is futile to reflect on it unless you are making sure you do not repeat past mistakes. The future is but a result of your actions today. So learn from the past to do better in the present so that you can succeed in the future.
  7. Even more specifically, live in THIS moment.Even 10 minutes ago is the past. If you live purely in this moment you will always be happy because there is nothing wrong in this split-second.
  8. Smile more often.Whenever you get a grin on your face, your brain is releasing serotonin, the happy hormone. Smiling is the natural way to force yourself to be happy. Many people even smile for five minutes straight in the morning to get themselves in a great mood for the day. It is a very powerful tool that is utilized less and less as we grow older and need happiness more than ever. Just remember that while happiness leads to smiles, smiles also lead to happiness.
  9. Drink water.Hydration is tremendously important for overall health. Soda has absolutely ZERO nutritional content; it?s like pouring a punch of sugar and syrup into your cup. Instead, fill it with life-replenishing water. It may taste plain at first if you?re coming off of a heavy soda-drinking streak, but you?ll soon find yourself addicted to it. 10 glasses per day is optimal, how many have you been getting lately?
  10. Don?t take life so seriously!Learn to laugh at the little things and this whole ?existence? thing will be a whole lot easier. Be amused by your mistakes and failures and be thankful that you learned your lesson and won?t mess up like that again. And most importantly do things that you enjoy! Life is not strictly business, it can be mixed with pleasure.
  11. Think positive thoughts. When you find yourself thinking a negative thought, stop it immediately by any means necessary. Slap yourself in the face, yell something positive at the top of your lungs or jump up and down. Do whatever it takes to get back to a positive mindset as such is essential for continual happiness and success.
  12. Read books.No explanation needed.
  13. Get in the sun.Superman was completely re-energized when he flew out to space and soaked in some rays and you can do the same right outside your front door (if you live in a constantly dreary place, my apologies). The sun feels amazing: your entire body will be coursing with warmth and life.
  14. Help others.I?ll just give you a plethora of reasons why this is a MUST
    • Helping people has a ripple effect. If you help someone they will feel more obliged to help someone else, and so on. Pay it forward
    • You grow by giving and helping others. It can change you in ways you never expected
    • Your relationship with that person will become stronger
    • It?s the most fulfilling thing you can do on this planet. It not only feels amazing physically, you also feel like a?good?person
    • You might be able to call in a favor later when you need some help
    • Karma (if you believe in it)
    • Because there are more people in this world than just you
  15. Set aside a specific time to worry each day.Ponder all of your problems and anxieties during that time so that they will not distract you during work or moments of pleasure. This way you can be extremely efficient with your time and avoid focusing on negative things as much as possible. If you get all of your worry out of the way and have the mental fortitude to keep from reverting back to them, you will be much happier on the daily.
  16. Be honest at all times.Lies lead to nothing but trouble. Being known as trustworthy is an excellent trait to maintain and essential to having integrity.
  17. Sleep less.Fully adjusting to a new sleep cycle can take up to 21 days so don?t give up if you feel tired after switching to 5-hour nights. The ?required? 8 hour/night is for normal people. If you?re reading THIS article on THIS site, you are not normal. So figure out how much sleep YOU really need and adjust accordingly. As enjoyable as sleep is, waking existence is much more fulfilling and efficient. IF this really sparks your interest, check out?alternate sleep cycles?with which you can be fine off of 2 hours of sleep per day.
  18. Read??Bringers of Light??and??Conversations with God??by Neale Donald Walsch. These books will help you decide what you want to do in this life and how to get to that point. They will also profoundly change the way you look at the purpose of existence. Read them!
  19. Figure out what your goals and dreams are.So many people wander aimlessly through life simply go for whatever small thing they want moment by moment. Instead, decide what your perfect life consists of and begin to put the steps in motion to reach that place. The most satisfying thing in the world (yes, better than sex, much better) is overcoming a challenge and reaching a goal. We are the happiest when we are growing and working towards something better.
  20. Start your day off right.Wake up and set aside an hour for personal development activities (meditation, self-introspection, observing nature, etc.) Do the things that make you feel blissful, optimistic and empowered so that you can set a positive tone for your day. I guarantee that once you start doing this, your days will be more enjoyable and fulfilling. Today is going to be the best day of your life. Duh.
  21. Utilize ?The Burning Method.?Whenever a fear or worry or complaint comes to mind, close your eyes and imagine writing down the thought on a piece of paper. Then proceed to light the paper and fire and watch it disintegrate. Even better,?actually?write it down and burn it. You won?t have any problem ridding your mind of the thought after doing this.
  22. Travel.?Frequent Flyer MasterAnyone who has ever gone anywhere will tell you that traveling is one of the most exciting and life-changing activities that you can do. Observing a different culture will expand your mind while making you further appreciate the life you already live. This goes back to becoming an explorer: this world is your jungle so go explore! Who knows, maybe you?ll find a place you love so much that you decide to move. Imagine the positive repercussions a new environment could have on your life.
  23. The Rubber Band MethodThis is the third and final way to rid yourself of negative thoughts (hopefully by now you have figured out that this is very important!). Place a rubber band around your wrist and snap it against your skin anytime a negative thought finds its way into your head. This operant conditioning technique associates a slight pain with negative thoughts like Pavlov associated food/salivation with the sound of a bell. Sounds a bit cruel at first but it only stings for a second, I promise. Plus the outcome, having only positive thoughts, far outweighs a little slap on the wrist here and there.
  24. Learn to be unaffected by the words of others. Most people get very upset when they are called negative names by others, but there is a simple trick to overcoming this. Here it is: If I went up to you and called you a fire hydrant, would you be upset? Of course not. Obviously you are not a fire hydrant, you are a human being. The same concept applies to when someone calls you something that you know you are not. They are foolish for saying such things, so why would you react with such anger? The only exception is when someone calls you something that is true! In this case, you should thank them for alerting you to a weakness, one that you can now work on changing.
  25. Read??Zen and the Art of Happiness??by Chris Prentiss. This book will give you the knowledge and instruction to be happy at all times regardless of the circumstances. Yes, this sounds like an oversimplification of happiness, but I assure you that this book will change you in an amazing way.
  26. Develop the ability to forgive.Forgiveness is something that most people fail miserably at even thought it?s so simple. Grudges only bring more misery to those who hold them and prevent good relations with the target. YOU makes mistakes all of the time so why not have mercy when other do? Remaining angry feels horrible while forgiving someone brings a refreshing sensation to the mind and healing to the relationship.
  27. Be the person that makes others feel special.Be known for your kindness and sympathy.
  28. Learn to lucid dream, or to realize when you are dreaming so that you can control your dreams. Sleep feels good, but it?s rather boring and unproductive. With lucid dreaming under your belt, night-time can be even more exciting than when you are awake. You can do anything: fly, travel to other planets, party with a celebrity, get intimate with your dream boy/girl, etc. Many lucid dreams have also reported being able to speak directly with the subconscious during dreams by demanding to be taken to it after becoming lucid. For those that know a thing or two about your subconscious, that is a BIG deal.
  29. Visualize daily. It has been said and proven time and time again that what you focus on is what you get. If you complain all of the time, you will run into more of the things you complain about. The same goes for good things like health, wealth and happiness. So spend some time in the morning imagining yourself achieving whatever it is that you currently desire. Focus is key in this exercise, so choose a quiet environment where you won?t be disturbed. If you?re having trouble focusing and continually find that your mind has wandered to something else, read about meditation in the following life tip. There is a lot more to this concept, so check out the full article on visualization and the law of attraction?here.
  30. Meditate everyday for at least 20 minutes. In this modern world where everyone is so connected to everything else via cell phones, TV and internet, most people rarely enjoy the beauty of silence. The ability to quiet your mind and relax your body is an art and skill that everyone should develop. Simply sit somewhere, preferably in nature, and focus on your breathing or try to think about nothing. This is going to be extremely hard at first! You might find it boring or just plain impossible to think of nothing, but you will get better and you will learn to love it. Post-meditation, you will feel extremely clear-headed and.. well, just plain wonderful. The only way to really understand this sensation is to try it.
  31. Learn to control your mind. What kind of skilled human are you if you cannot even control your own thoughts? While the human mind is described as being a stream of consciousness, that does not mean you can?t decide where your stream flows. Techniques like meditation and the 3 ways to flush out negative thoughts will aid you immensely in learning to control your mind.
  32. Learn to control your emotions. The only person that can make you unhappy is you! You are the one that decides to be affected by the words and actions of others. Realize this so that the next time you experience a negative emotion, you can find the strength within yourself to overcome it.
  33. Take a class in speed reading.Books are full of information that can enhance your knowledge-base, vocabulary and yourself as a person. Speed reading is an easy way to get at this info faster so that you can have more time for other endeavors.
  34. Relax! This one is for you workaholics out there (myself included). Yes, work is very important and productive but you need to take some time to chill out everyday or you are going to burn out faster than a candle with no oxygen. Additionally, you need to reward yourself for a job well done. What?s the use of doing all of that work if you can?t have a little fun from time to time anyways?
  35. Work on making good first impressions.Practice a strong, firm handshake and the small talk that generally goes along with meeting someone for the first time. People won?t know what to think of you if you have nothing more to say beyond ?My name is _______, nice to meet you.? Also make sure you remember names, as mentioned previously. Who knows, you may be going into business with or marrying this person you?re meeting for the first time if you make a good impression. Be sure and make an excellent one.
  36. Learn to use your eyes to their full potential:
    • Make constant eye contact when in conversation. Looking away (especially down) is a sign of inferiority and uncertainty. Instead, look at your conversation partner dead in the eyes and keep them locked on
    • Master the piercing stare. You know when someone looks at you and it feels like they can see into your soul? Well that?s not a hereditary characteristic, it just takes practice. Work on sharpening your gaze in the mirror. You?ll know you have it when it?s intimidating to continue looking at yourself
    • Master the one-eyebrow raise. This one isn?t necessary by any means, but hey, why not? Pick a brow to learn with and go look in a mirror. Raise both of your eyebrows but use your hand to hold down the brow that you want to stay down. This will probably feel very stupid at first but if you keep trying, you will eventually pin down the muscle you need to flex to get that one brow up
  37. Be mysterious.Don?t let off everything about you and definitely leave out some major details. There is something both alluring and mesmerizing about someone who no one knows fully about. I?m not saying to confide in no one or to alienate yourself. Just think James Bond.
  38. Come up with a life mantra. You know, like ?Carpe Diem? or ?Live life to the fullest,? but not as clich?. Make it something that really hits home with you so that you will actually stick to it. Make sure it? not so specific that it rarely applies but also not so general that it?s not personal.
  39. Get good at something.Call it a hobby or a passion, whatever it is, just get damn good at it. Your occupation does not count! Make it something that you can practice often enough to excel at. Examples: Magic tricks, surfing, ping-pong, creating short films, and unicycling. It can be anything but I would recommend choosing something that: 1) You are passionate about 2) You can bust out at any moment to display your skills for any discerning crowd. My mind goes immediately to aerobatics and break dancing, but that?s just me.
  40. Work out those abs.Above any other muscle group in the entire body, the abs are the most important. They constitute your core, the center point of your body. Your ability to balance comes almost completely from the strength of your abdominal muscles and balance is vital to performance in any physical activity. Summary: they?re very important. For more info on how to work out your abs, check out this?video.
  41. Keep your brain sharp. The majority of people are stuck in ruts. They go to the same job everyday, hang out with the same friends and eat at the same places. While that may feel safe, it?s not the most stimulating lifestyle for your brain. Those synapses have been built up enough, so try something that you do NOT know how to do! Buy a model car kit, master the art of sudoku or crosswords, or go pick up another major at your nearest college. The point is you need to be learning new things to keep your brain honest. Form?new?synapses by forcing your mind to work in ways it has not worked before. Just like physical workouts, doing too much of the same exercise will eventually give no results. Switch it up!
  42. Read something inspirational right before bed and after waking. This will set get you in a great mood for sleep and for the day. Read anything from a famous speech to your favorite self-improvement book. Try to read something that get?s you really excited in the morning especially so that you?ll leave your house beaming with energy and wonder.
  43. Do what you love.Working for Yourself GuideThere is a huge difference between making a life and making a living; which one are you making right now? So many spend their entire lives trying to make as much money as possible so that they can afford to do what they really want later. It makes no sense to settle in life until you?re 65 so that you can retire and do what you want when you?re already WAY past your prime. We only live life once so why wouldn?t you want to spend it pursuing your bliss? To do anything else would be a tragic waste of the freedom you are allowed if you are reading this right now. Follow your bliss and you will be a thousand times more happy than your retirement date and 40+ years younger.
  44. Choose your friends wisely. You are affected far more than you think by the people you spend your time with. Do your friends share your values? Do they encourage you when you speak of your goals and dreams or do they scoff? Make sure the people around you are conducive to the lifestyle you want to lead or you will find yourself being dragged again and again into behavior that distances you from your desires. Friends with a habit of producing negative thoughts will especially hinder you. This can be a hard task to follow through with if you realize you good friend is one of these saboteurs, but you must be firm! Don?t let anyone get in the way of you being all that you can be.
  45. Don?t burn bridges.By that I mean maintain your relationships with people even if you think you are never going to see them again. For example, if you are quitting your job, don?t chew out your boss before leaving! You might run into him/her again later and life and wish you had never severed ties so harshly. You never know when you might need the help of someone you knew in the past. Plus there is already too much hatred in this world, why add more towards the people you interact with?
  46. Keep a journal/diary.It sounds like a very monotonous habit at first, but when you get into it, that little book will become a great way to organize your thoughts and track your growth over the years. Most of us already stay awake in bed at night pondering the events of the day anyways so why not document those thoughts in an organized fashion? That will allow you to look back and observe how your way of thinking has changed over time.
  47. Read??New Pyscho-Cybernetics??by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. This book will explain why the content of your thoughts has such a profound effect on your life through religious, philosophical and scientific arguments. A must read for completely understand who this life thing works.
  48. Learn to use and trust your subconscious/intuition.When you spend time in silence everyday, listen not for words but for a feeling that tells you to do something. Do not mistake your own reasoning and thoughts for those of your subconscious. If you can track where the thought came from, (this thought led to that thought which led to this thought, etc.) then it was not from your subconscious. Learning to accurately discern between the two will allow you to tap into knowledge that you don?t consciously have.
  49. Develop a charismatic personality. You know, the kind of personality that is surrounded by people constantly and is the life of the party. Start visualizing yourself as THAT person. Maybe take a short course on dynamic speaking and learn some jokes. Take the time to learn some party tricks and sleight of hand. Most importantly, believe that you already are charismatic even if you fail at being the center point of the next party. Lie to yourself constantly and tell yourself that you are more warm and gregarious than Ronald Regan. Belief is the first step! Reality will come soon after.
  50. Love is all there is.If you truly want to be a master of life, let love be in your every action. Love your friends, family and enemies alike. This is the most difficult thing to do out of this entire list, which is why it is listed at #50. But if you accomplish this, you will be seen as a leader among everyone that allows hate, envy, disgust and all other negative emotions into their lives. Think Gandhi. Love is so rare in this world when compared to the massive presence of hate that by exuding love, you will immediately see yourself and the people around you change. Love. Love. Love.

Oakley unveils Airwave ski goggles equipped with Recon's MOD Live heads-up display, iOS app

Oakley's Airwave ski goggles riders with Recon's MOD Live HUD

Remember late last year when Recon Instruments introduced its MOD Live Android-enabled heads-up display for the likes of ski goggles?Joining the ranks of other optics makers, Oakley's partnered with the company to seamlessly integrate the unit into its own goggles, dubbed Airwave. It's not just another shell for the system, either, as Oakley will be providing a companion app that'll work with iOS -- which seems to be first official instance as such since Recon itself said it would be coming earlier this year. The MOD Live itself is otherwise the same right-eye positioned system (providing a perceived 14-inch display at five feet away) we've seen for almost a year now, so don't expect to get the clearest picture if you're left eye dominant or use contact lenses for distance. Furthermore, there's still GPS for tracking friends / navigation, and Bluetooth to work with a water-resistant wrist remote that allows you to control your smartphone and the display itself. Of course, this also means Recon's Android SDK will also be workable, as will your Contour camera.

If you're interested in Oakley's spin on the MOD Live, the Airwave will hit Apple stores on October 31st for $600 in your choice of black with a black Iridium lens, or a white with black graphics and a "fire" colored variant of the lens -- yes, they're interchangeable just like most of Oakley's other specs. If you're curious for further details in the meantime, check out the simulation video and press release after the break. Now, how about those full-on smart glasses to take on Google Glass as the company's CEO mentioned in April?
