Americans? support for Israel grows in wake of Arab Spring, poll reveals

The convulsions of the Arab Spring may be driving the American public?s support for Israel to new highs, according to a poll released Wednesday by the Washington-based group The Israel Project.

Americans who say the United States should support the Jewish state in the conflict with the Palestinians increased from 60 percent a year ago to 68% today, a survey of voters taken November 6-8 by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner has found.

[...]

That analysis is supported by the finding that 81% of Americans want to maintain or bolster US relations with Israel, while only 13% want the US to distance itself from Israel. (A consistent 2% want the US to ?end its relationship with Israel.?)

That?s a significant bump in support for the relationship from one year earlier, when support for maintaining or strengthening the relationship was at 73%, and for distancing at 23%.

British man killed in S. Africa farm robbery

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Police in South Africa say a British man who ran a nature reserve on a rural farm was killed in a robbery.

Capt. Phumelelo Dhlamini of the South African Police Service said Monday that 54-year-old Christopher Preece was killed in the attack at his farm near Ficksburg, a town near the border with Lesotho. Dhlamini said Preece had gone outside Saturday night to check to see why the power had been cut at his farm called Fleur des Lis when three men attacked him with machetes.

Preece bled to death. Dhlamini said Preece's 56-year-old wife was seriously wounded in the attack and is now hospitalized. The captain said robbers stole about $350 and a mobile phone.

Vitamin D reported to lower the risk of multiple sclerosis

A new study by Swedish researchers has reported that individuals with high levels of Vitamin D in their blood have a lower risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers affiliated with Ume? University, Ume?, Sweden published their findings on November 20 in the journal Neurology.

The goal of the study was to examine the association between Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D)) levels and the risk of MS in blood samples collected prospectively and during pregnancy. (Prospective collection means that the samples were collected before the individuals developed MS.) The investigators evaluated 291,500 blood samples from 164,000 individuals collected since 1975 in the northern half of Sweden. They identified prospectively collected blood samples from 192 MS cases matched two to one with controls matched and samples from pregnant mothers whose offspring had later developed MS (37 women, matched five to one with controls. Vitamin D levels were measured using an ELISA, and the risk of MS was analyzed using matched logistic regression.

The researchers found that Vitamin D levels in prospectively collected blood samples were associated with a decreased risk of MS (odds ratio: 0.39). No decrease in MS risk was found in the offspring exposed to higher Vitamin D levels in utero. The prevalence of Vitamin D levels in the control women decreased gradually from 1976 through 2005.

The researchers concluded that their study supports the presence of an association between high Vitamin D levels during the years preceding disease onset and a decreased risk of MS. In the very limited material with samples drawn in early pregnancy, where month-of-birth effects were controlled for, they found no association between gestational Vitamin D levels and MS risk in the offspring. They noted that decreasing Vitamin D levels in the population may contribute to explain the increasing MS incidence that is suggested from epidemiologic studies.

MS affects woman more than men. The disorder most commonly begins between ages 20 and 40, but can be seen at any age. It is caused by damage to the myelin sheath, the protective covering that surrounds nerve cells. When this nerve covering is damaged, nerve impulses are slowed down or stopped. MS is a progressive disease, meaning the nerve damage (neurodegeneration) gets worse over time. How quickly MS gets worse varies from person to person.

The nerve damage is caused by inflammation. Inflammation occurs when the body's own immune cells attack the nervous system. Repeated episodes of inflammation can occur along any area of the brain and spinal cord. Researchers are not sure what triggers the inflammation. The most common theories point to a virus or genetic defect, or a combination of both. MS is more likely to occur in northern Europe, the northern United States, southern Australia, and New Zealand than in other areas. Geographic studies indicate there may be an environmental factor involved. People with a family history of MS and those who live in a geographical area with a higher incidence rate for MS have a higher risk of the disease.

Symptoms vary, because the location and severity of each attack can be different. Episodes can last for days, weeks, or months. These episodes alternate with periods of reduced or no symptoms (remissions). Fever, hot baths, sun exposure, and stress can trigger or worsen attacks. It is common for the disease to return (relapse). However, the disease may continue to get worse without periods of remission. Because nerves in any part of the brain or spinal cord may be damaged, patients with multiple sclerosis can have symptoms in many parts of the body.

Readers: $300 cellphone bills hit family budgets

Dessa Jarmon

Dessa Jarmon pays nearly $4,000 annually for cell phone service.

"It's the biggest bill in the house, outside of the mortgage payment."

T.J. Pinales of Austin, Texas, holds his nose and writes a check to Verizon Wireless every month for about $325, astonished that telephone service now occupies the No. 2 slot in the family budget. But NBC News heard that lament again recently as readers responded to a story about a wireless trade industry report claiming average cellphone bills are going down.

?At one point, we were against cellphones, then we got them, and had conservative plans, and then the bill grows and grows,? said Pinales, a construction worker. Pinales has five phones for his family and pays for a WiFi hotspot, which he uses while on-site at large commercial projects. ?When he downloads a large architectural drawing, though, he worries about his bill going up.

In response to a Red Tape Chronicles invitation, nearly 1,400 readers wrote in to share details about their phone bills. They told of cutting back on other purchases to pay for smartphone service, struggling to pay bills and avoid service cutoffs and shopping around to save money only to find that all service providers ultimately charge similar prices.

"It's modern-day crack," said Dessa Jarmon, of Tacoma, Wash., who pays nearly $4,000 annually for cellphone service for her family ? ?three smartphones, one flip phone. Jarmon was laid off from her bookkeeping job six months ago, but doesn?t see many options for lowering her $330-a-month bill that wouldn?t involve major early termination fees or loss of service. ?She already gets a 17 percent discount, thanks to her husband?s job.? Does she feel like she?s getting good value for her money?

"Every time a call drops, I certainly don't," she said.

CTIA, the cell phone trade group, said in a report last month that the average cellphone bill is $47, though in a follow-up interview, the agency clarified that the figure represents an average per handset. In other words, a family of four with a bill of $188 would be considered average.

But reader e-mails seem to suggest that's a little low. Of the 1,400 readers who responded, 80 noted their bill was between $190 and $210. On average, that group had 3.1 phones, meaning the cost is about $65 per phone. People with bills near $250 paid $67 per phone.?

The median bill -- representing the midpoint of all bills sent to us -- was $124.

It?s important to note that the survey was not scientific ?or statistically representative, and many of those wrote in were already angry about the size of their bills. ?Still, the high price of staying connected comes through loud and clear in the data.

The most common refrain among consumers who agreed to follow-up interviews was this: How did the bill climb so far, so fast?

?At the store, you get what seems like a good plan until you get your first bill, and then you say, ?What the hell? This isn't what I signed up for,?" said Sarah Herring, 37, who lives outside Milwaukee. "Everything isn?t clear, and then suddenly you are spending money you don?t really have."

Sarah Herring

David and Sarah Herring pay a lot for wireless Internet access so he can study on long bus rides to law school.

Herring?s $240 monthly bill for four phones was lower than many others with the same number of phones, but it is still a bitter pill to swallow. She moved to Wisconsin from Flagstaff, Ariz., earlier this year, so her husband, who recently completed 10 years of military service, could attend law school. The couple and their three kids live in a suburb, and he needs broadband wireless Internet access so he can study on the bus.? "There's a very specific reason we have the phones we have," she said.

Two smartphones with data plans can't be had for much less than $200. Throw in a couple of "dumb" phones, even at discount prices, and the cost climbs to near $250 for the Herrings.

Like many consumers, she complained about the cell industry's move to charge more for data plans.

"As far as I'm concerned, it seems like a huge rip-off, but what do you do?" she said.? The family never eats out, she said, and social life consists of a case of beer every few weeks. "There's a lot of stuff we don?t do because we have the bills we have."

Shannon Rodriguez, a school guidance counselor in Houston, Texas, was struggling last week to find $805 to get her phone service restored.?

"There's just something else that won't get paid this month," said Rodriguez, whose husband also works at the school. The couple?s biggest problem: His family lives in Mexico, and while they pay extra for cheaper international calling and texting rates, those discounts are limited. During the past two months, calling home turned a $200 bill into a $400 bill. ?And unlike land lines, where service interruptions were heavily regulated and basic service disconnection could be delayed, wireless firms are unforgiving for unpaid bills.

"This is our family phone. We don't have a house phone," Rodriguez said. "In this day and age, not having a phone is like not having a leg."

Rodriguez said she understands that cellphone companies have to be strict in their collections, and said she takes responsibility for the bill, which will get paid -- somehow.

"My head is still spinning. Can I sell an organ?" she joked. "It's bad. We're fully aware of how it works, but it's very easy to slip up and when you realize it, it's too late. You know what? It's our fault. We'll just have to suck it up, but it definitely makes things extremely unpleasant."

Do you have a nagging feeling that you are spending too much on monthly bills, or getting ripped off? Tell me ? you might get a Gotchanalysis and be a featured in a new series. Write to BobSullivan@feedback.msnbc.com to nominate yourself or a friend.

Another clear theme in the data: families are hit hard because they often have three, four, even five phones. And it?s getting harder and harder to beat back teenagers? demands for smartphones. It?s even harder to stop them from gobbling up precious data allotments with video downloads. Rodriguez, Jarmon and Pinellas all gave smartphones to their kids, but share minutes with them and try to cap their usage.

That, said Jarmon, a former AirTouch cellular customer service agent, can be a losing battle.

"I had to raise our allotment once already. We did go over last month -- we were at 6 (gigabytes per month) but had to go to 8,? she said. ? When I looked at what was using the data, it was that my stepson was sending video texts. But what am I supposed to do, sit down every night and look at everybody's phone and look at their usage? I'm not going do that. I have other things to do."

Cellphone providers have always encouraged users to overpay by charging severe penalties for overuse ? 25-cents-per- minute voice overage charges or 20-cent fees for excess texts, for example. That?s true with data plans, too. Verizon let consumers buy 2 extra gigabytes of downloads in advance for $10 monthly; those same two gigabytes would cost $30 after the fact. So it makes sense for consumers to overbuy, as a form of insurance.

Lina Fetter, of northwestern Pennsylvania, said she has tried to shop around and cut her bill, but she has priced plans for her family with all the major providers and come to this dismal conclusion:

"They all just market their plans a little differently, but when you put all the pieces together they come out almost the same," Fetter said, adding that she pays $268 monthly for four phones. "I look at it constantly. I'm constantly trying to figure out how to get rid of stuff... (but) I can't figure out how to make it cheaper."?

And now her cellphone bill is more expensive than one her car payments, she noted.

"My cellphone bill used to be $60,? she said. ?The next thing you know, it was $100, then $120, then $200, and they you are sitting there saying "Holy cow, how did it get to $260.? What can I take off?"

The answer might lie in the data sent in by NBC News readers.? Not everyone who wrote in said their bill was above the average cost listed in the CTIA industry report.? In fact, 230 of the 1,400 said their bills were lower than $50 every month. Next week, we?ll talk to them and find out what their secrets are.

MSU uses $7.8 million grant to improve farming in Africa

posted on November 15, 2012 10:14am

CONTACT: ? Thomas Jayne, Agriculture, Food and Resource Economics, Office: (517) 355-0131, Cell: (517) 355-0131, Office: 260 (0) 977-771079 (Zambia), .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address); Layne Cameron, Media Communications, Office: (517) 353-8819, Cell: (765) 748-4827, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address); Duncan Boughton, Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics, Office: (517) 432-6659, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

?EAST LANSING, Mich. ? Michigan State University researchers will use a $7.8 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help eight African nations improve their sustainable farming methods.

The grant, from the Gates Foundation Global Development Program, will be used to help guide policymaking efforts to intensify farming methods that meet agricultural needs while improving environmental quality in Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Ethiopia and Tanzania.

Programs like this are paramount to Africa, as demonstrated by more than $2.5 billion in annual spending by African governments on agricultural intensification, said Thomas Jayne, project co-director and MSU agricultural, food and resource economics faculty member.

?All of the partners have made a long-term commitment to help this region?s programs reach their full potential,? he said. ?MSU has longstanding expertise in this field, and our commitment to institution building was a major reason as to why the Gates Foundation put its trust in MSU for this grant.?

During the next four years, the team will work with 10 African universities, institutes and government ministries to promote effective government strategies that help African farmers become more productive and food secure. The team also will build the capacity of national policy institutes to guide and support their own countries? agriculture ministries and eventually accept and manage international grants.

Along with the international partnerships, Jayne will collaborate with fellow MSU researchers from the agricultural, food and resource economics department, including Melinda Heisey, Lenis Liverpool-Tasie, Niama Dembele, Isaac Minde, David Mather and Duncan Boughton. Together, the team will focus on three key crops ? maize, sorghum and rice ? and seek to improve seed development, fertilization and crop rotation to increase yields in a sustainable manner.

The grant builds upon MSU?s longstanding commitment to this region and stands as a tribute to the legacy of the MSU researchers who pioneered efforts such as these, Jayne added. In 2008, MSU used a $4 million Gates Foundation grant to analyze the region?s agricultural marketing and trade systems to provide guidance to governments in the region on strategies to raise agricultural productivity and create more efficient, sustainable markets for small farmers.

?By guiding investments and developing policies, we?re hoping to create benefits that go beyond the direct recipients,? Jayne said. ?The ripple effect could provide insights that feed more broadly into improving the policy processes in other countries in the region.?

German Greens avoid split by re-electing leftist

HANOVER, Germany (Reuters) - Germany's Greens party re-elected its two party leaders on Saturday with overwhelming majorities that put to rest speculation of a schism between its centrist and left wings ahead of next year's election.

Claudia Roth, a left-winger defeated a week ago in her bid to become one of two lead candidates in 2013, was elected to another two years as party co-chair with 88.5 percent backing.

Cem Oezdemir, who represents the pragmatic or "realo" wing and has pushed the world's most successful environmentalist party to open itself to coalitions with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives, was also re-elected with the votes of 83.3 percent of 766 delegates.

Although both ran unopposed, the level of support was considered an important indicator of the party's backing.

The Greens were junior coalition partners to the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) from 1998 to 2005. They hope for a return to government in another coalition next September -- preferably with the SPD again.

But they have opened themselves to a possible alliance with Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) -- an idea that was once anathema to what began as a peacenik ecological movement in the 1970s.

Roth considered bowing out of the leadership after she came fourth in the race to be the face of the Greens in the 2013 election. But her departure could have aggravated tensions with the party's left wing, which once ruled the roost but has been marginalized in recent years as the Greens try to win over voters in the middle.

"I'm not going to change my ways. And I'm not going to stop getting on everyone's nerves," Roth said before the vote.

Speculation about the Greens drifting towards the conservatives had been rampant in the last week after party members unexpectedly picked Katrin Goering-Eckardt, a leader in the Lutheran church, as their lead candidate instead of Roth.

Political analysts believe Goering-Eckardt can help the Greens poach conservative voters. But Roth's departure from the co-chair post could have hurt the party on the left.

Merkel's conservatives lead opinion polls with about 39 percent support but her junior coalition partners, the Free Democrats (FDP), have fallen below the 5 percent threshold needed to win seats with only 4 percent.

The Greens poll around 13 percent and the SPD is on 30 percent. Polls also show most Germans favor another "grand coalition" between the conservatives and SPD.

AP: Bera ousts GOP Rep. Dan Lungren in District 7 race

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Republican Rep. Dan Lungren has lost his re-election bid to Democratic challenger Ami Bera in one of California's most hotly contested congressional contests.

Voters from the Sacramento suburbs ousted the veteran lawmaker in the race for the state's newly redrawn 7th Congressional District. This was the second attempt for Bera, a 45-year-old physician who failed to unseat Lungren two years ago.

Bera challenged Lugren back in 2010 but came up short by 7 percentage points.

The Associated Press called the race for Bera on Thursday. He defeated Lungren 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent.

"It's quite an honor to serve residents of Sacramento County. There's no greater privilege," Bera said.

Bera's win adds to Democratic gains in California's congressional races. The state's majority party benefited from an independent redistricting process that was in full effect for the first time this year.

Bera believes he won because people are ready for a change. He also believes redistricting could have played a part.

Before, the district had more 9,000 more Republicans than Democrats. After redistricting, there were 5,000 more Democrats than Republicans.

"I think most of us want to move past Democrat vs. Republican," Bera said.?"I think we want to find common values that bind us together as Sacramentans."

Before the Nov. 6 election, California's congressional delegation had 33 Democrats, 19 Republicans and one vacancy in a Democratic district.

Outgoing congressman Lungren hasn't called Bera yet. The Associate Press said Lungren would not to concede, to which Bera replied that he thanks Lungren for his many years of service.

"The AP has called the race. Let's honor him," Bera said.?"He'll do the right thing when he's ready."

Google+ now implementing Play Store direct download links for apps

Google+ Play Store Download

It's just been brought to our attention that Google+ has rolled out a new feature that integrates Google Play links directly into stream posts. Now when you link to an app in the Play Store, other users viewing the post can directly install it on their devices without having to be redirected to the Play Store listing first.

This is a pretty sweet feature considering how expansive the Android Google+ community is. Anything that helps users share apps between each other is good for everyone. Not to mention that this shows off the great potential and versatility that Google is trying to implement with all of its products and services.

 Thanks, @DSaifAndroid!

Our Journey Home

my most embarassing motherhood moment, to date

?

We had just left Bella's ballet lesson and I needed to run into the dollar store for a few items. I ran through the parking lot with all three children- it was a cold, rainy day! We grabbed what we needed and stood in the checkout line. Bella said, "Mommy! Why does that man have such long hair?" I looked at the man standing only feet away, just ahead of us in the line. My face turned red; she said?it awfully loud!?I lowered my voice, "Well, some boys like to have long hair." I kept my eyes on the man, waiting to see if he was going to turn around so I could give him an 'I am sorry if my 5 year old just insulted you' smile. Bella must have noticed where my gaze was fixed, because she looked at me, she looked at the man, and then back at me. "No mommy! Not that man, THAT MAN!" Bella then proceeded to point straight at the store clerk- who was female. I wanted to crawl underneath the chip display!!! The clerk had a ponytail all the way down to her waistline, which had gotten Bella's attention, but since she was not wearing any makeup and her uniform shirt was black... Bella had made a terrible,oh-so- audible mistake. wink! Yep, my most embarrassed motherhood moment, to date! ha ha ha!

The Science Surrounding James Bond | Australian Science

James Bond in Skyfall. Original source: The Guardian. Photograph: Francois Duhamel

Bond. Double Bond.

That was a quip a lab partner of mine cracked during a sophomore chemistry class and I have not forgotten since. And it is a perfect lead in for this week?s post as I take you through the past and into a closer look with ? The Science Surrounding James Bond.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Ian Fleming?s classic James Bond series. And Friday, 9 November 2012, the 23rd installment of the series, Skyfall, hit theatres in the United States. And I wouldn?t have missed it for the world.

I became a James Bond fan early on, around age 5, thanks to my Dad. Perhaps, not the most appropriate film choice for a 5-year-old per se, but that?s water under the bridge. What captivated my attention so? The action-packed chases, the sports cars (Aston Martin DB5, yes, please), the explosions, the science behind it all!

The Quartermaster ? Q

The Quartermaster, known affectionately by the moniker ?Q? is head of the fictional research and development division of the British Secret Service. Q ? always the scene stealer, in my opinion, whether portrayed by John Cleese, Desmond Llewellyn, Peter Burton, and now the youngest gadget genius, Ben Whishaw ? keeps the spy business humming along.?Where would 007 be without Q who created so many of those gadgets allowing his to escape safely and serve country and Queen? Q in fact answers this question in License to Kill.

?If it hadn?t been for Q Branch, you?d have been dead long ago? ? Q to Bond

Yes, where would James Bond be without science and technology?

I could not possibly list all of the gadgets and technology featured in the James Bond films. Well, I could, but for space?s sake I?ll refrain. I?ll just highlight some of the more clever mechanics and mind-blowing inventions, some of which still have relevance today. Perhaps. This may be a list of mundane ordinary household items or personal effects, that are anything but, and all very much deadly. I?ll also include the movie reference for homework, just in case you?d like to check it out for yourself.

Handgun with palm recognition ? Skyfall

Bioemetric Fingerprint Scanner ? Diamonds Are Forever

Radioactive Lint ? On Her Majesty?s Secret Service ?(Fun fact ? George Lazenby who played Bond in this film is Australian)

Perfume Flamethrower ? The Spy Who Loved Me

Montblanc fountain pen ? Octopussy

Mini Submarine ? For Your Eyes Only

SNOOPER ? A View to a Kill

Philips Keychain ? The Living Daylights?

Miniature Binoculars ? The Living Daylights?

Dentonite Toothpaste ? Licence to Kill

Surfboard ? Die Another Day

Kids, there is a lot of chemistry, physics and hi-stakes math going on these films, so pay attention. Many of these inventions and gadgets helped keep humankind safe from terrorism and evil in the films. I?d hate to be a Debbie Downer and mention the downside, such as the loss of life, and destruction to the environment that sometimes results from Bond?s escapades, but there is a price to pay for freedom. All the more reason to study the sciences with the aim to improve the?societal good of the world!

The Old and the New

The tales of Bond have allowed audiences to see the world; those that maybe haven?t had the luxury to travel so much. For a kid growing up on a farm in the Midwest, those movies opened my eyes to different lands and cultures and set my mind racing with possibilities. Possibilities of what I wanted to do in the field of science.

I really don?t want to give anything away for those that have yet to see the film (IT?S SUPERB!), but Skyfall especially displays that melding of the classic Bond with the futuristic Bond. Bond has actually found immortality ? the writers, producers and actors have found ways to continually reincarnate and refresh this character for future audiences. Here?s to another 50 years of shaken martinis, fine tailoring, fast sports cars, death-defying stunts, witty one-liners and keeping the world safe from terrorism at all levels. Cheers.

Chavez to Obama: forget global wars, fix domestic woes

CARACAS (Reuters) - The U.S. government's chief antagonist in Latin America, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, has advised newly re-elected U.S. President Barack Obama to avoid further entanglement in international conflicts and concentrate on fixing internal problems.

"He should reflect first on his own nation, which has a lot of economic and social problems. It's a divided, socially fractured country with a super-elite exploiting the people," the socialist president said late on Thursday in his first reaction to Obama's victory this week.

The maverick Chavez, who has inherited Fidel Castro's mantle as Latin America's most voluble challenger of U.S. power and policy, said it was time Obama pulled back from global affairs.

"He should dedicate himself to governing his country and forget dividing and invading other nations," added Chavez, who has constantly criticized U.S. involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan and other hot spots around the world.

To the disappointment of the U.S. government, Chavez was re-elected for another six-year term in October, providing a continued platform to implement his self-styled socialist revolution and keep railing against Washington.

The 58-year-old Chavez, a quieter figure these days after a year of debilitating treatment for two bouts of cancer, had backed Obama over Republican challenger Mitt Romney in the White House.

Nevertheless, he does not disguise his disappointment in Obama, accusing him of perpetuating the same aggressive foreign policies as his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Since his October 7 presidential election victory over opposition challenge Henrique Capriles, Chavez has been relatively subdued, only popping up on state television once or twice a week in meetings with ministers.

He has made no major new policy announcements, beyond promising more efficiency in government and a widening of socialist "communes" across Venezuelan society.

Many Venezuelans expect a devaluation of the bolivar currency in coming months - the black market rate is three times the official one - and perhaps more nationalizations in an economy where Chavez has radically increased state ownership.

"I'M NO WOLF"

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Chavez made light of nationalization concerns, urging businesses not to fear him.

"Come and invest! Don't believe the fairy tale that we're going to expropriate you," he said in comments on state TV.

Earlier in the week, Chavez plied the same line, espousing a supposed new moderation toward private business that critics scoff at as hypocritical and barely believable.

"It's totally false that I have a plan to expropriate everyone," he said then. "Don't be deceived by that tale of 'here comes the wolf.' Lies. I'm urging you to come and work."

He was less conciliatory in his view of Venezuela's upcoming state elections on December 16, casting them in his Thursday appearance as a continuation of the state's battle against "counter-revolutionary" candidates of "the bourgeoisie."

"We have to keep fighting this ideological confrontation," he urged his candidates for governorships in the 23 states.

The most closely watched vote is in Miranda state, where incumbent governor Capriles aims to hold off a challenge from Elias Jaua, a heavyweight Chavez ally and former vice president.

Should Capriles lose, it would dent his status as Venezuela's main opposition leader and deal another blow to the coalition of anti-Chavez parties already demoralized by their failure to oust him from the presidency.

However, pollster IVAD put Capriles way ahead this week, with 55 percent of voter intentions versus 34 percent for Jaua. The opposition currently holds seven states.

GOP showing in Calif. worries party strategists

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? If the future happens first in California, the Republican Party has a problem.

The nation's most populous state ? home to 1 in 8 Americans ? has entered a period of Democratic political control so far-reaching that the dwindling number of Republicans in the Legislature are in danger of becoming mere spectators at the statehouse.

Democrats hold the governorship and every other statewide office. They gained even more ground in Tuesday's elections, picking up at least three congressional seats while votes continue to be counted in two other tight races ? in one upset, Democrat Raul Ruiz, a Harvard-educated physician who mobilized a district's growing swath of Hispanic voters, pushed out longtime Republican Rep. Mary Bono Mack.

The party also secured a supermajority in one, and possibly both, chambers in the Legislature.

"Republican leaders should look at California and shudder," says Steve Schmidt, who managed John McCain's 2008 campaign and anchored former Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's re-election team in 2006. "The two-party system has collapsed."

Republican voter registration has dipped so low ? less than 30 percent ? that the party's future state candidates will be hobbled from the start.

Republicans searching for a new direction after Mitt Romney's defeat will inevitably examine why President Barack Obama rolled up more than 70 percent of the Hispanic and Asian vote, and 9 of 10 votes among blacks, essential ingredients in his victory. Women also supported Obama over Romney nationally and in California, where they broke for the president by 27 percentage points.

There is no better place to witness how demographic shifts have shaped elections than in California, the home turf of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan that just a generation ago was a reliably Republican state in presidential contests.

A surge in immigrants transformed the state, and its voting patterns. The number of Hispanics, blacks and Asians combined has outnumbered whites since 1998 in California, and by 2020 the Hispanic population alone is expected to top that of whites. With Latinos, for example, voter surveys show they've overwhelmingly favored Democratic presidential candidates for decades. Similar shifts are taking place across the nation.

"There are demographic changes in the American electorate that we saw significantly, first, here in California and Republicans nationally are not reacting to them," said Jim Brulte, a former Republican leader in the California Senate.

"Romney overwhelmingly carried the white vote ? 20 years ago, that would have meant an electoral landslide. Instead, he lost by 2 million votes" in the state, Brulte said.

Perhaps no part of the state better illustrates how Republicans surrendered ground than in Orange County, once a largely white, GOP bastion where Nixon's seaside home became known as the Western White House.

Today, whites make up a little more than 40 percent of the population, while 2 in 10 residents are Asian and about 1 in 3 is Hispanic, according to the census.

In 1980, Jimmy Carter managed to collect about a quarter of the vote against Reagan in the county. But by 1996, with the county diversifying, Bill Clinton grabbed 38 percent of the vote, and Al Gore boosted that to 40 percent in 2000. This year, Obama won 44 percent of the vote in Orange County, according to preliminary returns.

Romney "implemented a winning election strategy for 1980," University of Southern California professor Patrick James said in a statement issued by the school. "If you look at the demographics and voting proportions, the Reagan coalition would not win a majority today."

Celeste Greig, president of the conservative California Republican Assembly, said in an email to supporters Friday that the party was in need of a makeover, emphasizing Main Street over Wall Street.

"We have to admit that as a party in California, we're just plain disorganized," she wrote.

Romney bypassed California this year, waging his fight in battlegrounds such as Ohio and Florida. In claiming the biggest electoral prize in America, California's 55 electoral votes, Obama rolled up a nearly 21 percent margin. Voters also returned Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein to Washington in a landslide, after Republicans put up a virtually unknown candidate, Elizabeth Emken, an autism activist who had never held elected office.

Independents now outnumber Republicans in 13 congressional districts in California, a trend analysts predict will continue.

California counted more registered Republicans in 1988 than it does today, although the population has grown by about 10 million over that time. You'd have to go back to that year to find a Republican presidential candidate who carried the state, George H.W. Bush.

Surprisingly, Democrats continued to make gains in the state even at a time of double-digit unemployment, with polls showing that voters are unhappy with Sacramento and Washington. And it could get worse for the GOP. Republicans are trailing in two other House races in which the vote counting continues.

It remains unclear what direction Democrats, who have close ties to public employee unions, will take with their additional clout. If they achieve the supermajority in both houses of the Legislature, Democrats can pass tax increases and override gubernatorial vetoes without any Republican support.

The state is saddled with a litany of problems, including a long-running budget crisis, massive, unfunded public pension obligations, tuition increases at California universities and growing demands for water, affordable housing and energy.

Gov. Jerry Brown sounded a cautionary note this week, saying he intended to avoid spending binges.

Still, Democrats believe they have the state's demographics on their side with a message that appeals to a younger, more diverse population.

More than half the young voters in the state, ages 18 to 39, are Hispanic, according to the independent Field Poll. Thirty-five percent are Asian. If you look into a classroom in the Los Angeles area ? tomorrow's voters ? 3 of 4 kids are Hispanic.

The GOP retains pockets of influence regionally, including rural, inland areas.

Republican National Committee member Shawn Steel has been pushing the party to become more aggressive about recruiting Asians.

"It's not just all about the Latinos," he says.

Schmidt traces GOP troubles with Hispanics to 1994, when voters with encouragement from Republican Gov. Pete Wilson enacted Proposition 187, which prohibited illegal immigrants from using health care, education or other social services.

The law eventually was overturned, but it left lingering resentment with many Hispanics at a time when the Latino population was growing swiftly and becoming increasingly important in elections.

California "is not just a large state, population-wise, it's a trend-setting state," said Schmidt, a public relations strategist. "It could be a glimpse of the future."
